Is my CPU defective?

Thread Starter
Hi guys.

My CPU, a AMD X4 630, has been really slow for the past few months. I mainly do video encoding on this computer, which also acts as a HTPC. I used to be able to get about 9fps, but for the past few months I've only been able to get about 3fps. I thought my settings were wrong, maybe bloated avisynth script. So I just stopped encoding and moved it to my main computer to do.

Now I got time on my hands, I decided to do some testing. I thought it was my OS, so I ghost'd it back to a clean copy, same issue, so I ghost'd it back to my original state.

Now the next test is really interesting. I decided to underclock my CPU to the lowest possible clock : 1.00GHz, which is almost a 3x slower clock than the stock clock speed. I managed to get about the same performance at 1GHz than 2.8GHz! I get 0.5fps more on x264 (5.5fps vs 5fps), but on Intel's burn test I get 0.2GFlops less (8.1GFlops vs 8.3GFlops).

On all cases task manager shows the CPU fully utilized.

Nevertheless, I shouldn't get similar performances under 1/3 clock. Does anybody know what's wrong with my computer?

My computer consists of the following components. Everything is at stock.

CPU: AMD X4 630
RAM: 3GB @ 667MHz
PSU: Antec Truepower 460W
MB: Gigabyte GA-785GM-US2H
HDD: WD 500GB Blue
GPU: Integrated Radeon HD 4200

How many sticks of Ram do you have?
Did you try testing each stick one at a time?

just out of curiosity have to cleaned your HDD at all? regular maintenance will keep your system running tip top.

Clock back to stock settings

to see exactly what your AMD is doing DL AMD Overdrive and open the system monitor to view all the cores clocks and voltages as well as the temps and loads at idle and while your working.

post back

This is also a good tool for diagnostics: AMD System Monitor

Have you tired disabling Cool and Quite in your Bios? Perhaps CnQ is keeping the multipliers down for some reason even under load

IMHO, the cpu is the last thing to die. You have to consider other parts that I and other members mention e.g. ram, hardrive. A defective cpu will cause worse than you are currently experiencing.

Single channel RAM may indeed be bottlenecking you if you are not running 2 or 4 DIMMs. Video encoding is very RAM intensive... dual channel is a must, lots of RAM is better as well.

Turns out I forgot to plug in the fan wire for my CPU the last time I cleaned my computer. Now I plugged it in, and my CPU is back to normal. I'm frankly amazed the CPU could not only run without a fan, but run at 1/3 of its speed for hours without shutting down my computer.

Your case fans save your cpu.
