Upgrade to i7 960 or Sandy Bridge

Thread Starter
I'm looking to upgrade my current rig in advance of all the new games coming out this year I want to play. No matter which way I go I'm looking at a new mother board, cpu, and ram.

My buddy offered me his never opened i7 960 and Intel DX58SO for $150 CAD. Would I be stupid not to take him up on this or should I maybe save up more for Sandy Bridge and possible futureproofing?

How does the 960 overclock?

I'm also looking into a new video card and a way to make my PC quieter but I'll do a new thread for that.

For 150, go for it. I'll refrain from calling you names if you don't but it's a great deal assuming prices are even remotely similar in Ontario as they are in US.

960's are good CPU's. Same as 920 or 930 just a higher multiplier. I'm pretty sure they are all DO revisions but you might want to double check that.

Intel Mobo's aren't known as great overclockers and I'm seeing that as the downfall of this. Even so it's still a great deal.

for that price yes go for it... Gona cost alot more to go SB...

For 150 its an easy choice...

the 960 is good for 4.0 - 4.4 depending on the cpu and if you can keep it cool...

The CPU is worth more than 150CAD. Buy it, you can't go wrong.
