Except, of course, when someone who has never used one decides that they are overhyped based on appearance. Then it's a sort of anti-opinion really.

Blues - typing
Browns - compromise but leans towards typing
Reds - compromise but leans towards gaming
Blacks - gaming

of course that's just my opinion from experience typing on them and playing mostly FPS/action games

I can see the merit that browns/blues would have with RTS/RPG games where distinct and precise (as opposed to fast, fluid, and free-form) keyboard input is essential

But it really does all come down to opinion. After using linear (reds/blacks) for so long after deciding I liked them better for gaming, I have come to prefer them for typing.
I found the Browns are almost linear anyway. Given how expensive the Red switch keyboards are, I'd think most people would be happy with Browns.

I think most people would be happy with almost any mechanical switch.

Browns are definitely a safe bet for someone unsure and inexperienced, but I don't think its fair calling them almost linear when really comparing them to reds and blacks. Maybe to other tactile switches they could be described that way to emphasize the difference but its definitely not accurate to call them that compared directly to a true linear switch, at least not from my experience with them.
