Raid 1 to Raid 10

Thread Starter
Good morning!

Current Setup:
I currently operate a small business with a server that I built myself. My current raid setup is 2x750gb WD Caviar Black 750gb 7200RPM with an on-board controller in RAID 1.

Problem:
As my business is expanding, the database is taking ever longer to query and thus, I have been considering changing RAID structures.

I want to change to a RAID 10. I just ordered 2x WD Velociraptor 300gb. I initially wanted to raid 10 with the 2x velociraptor and 2x caviar black but now that I think of it, the caviar black would be bottle necking this RAID, if this RAID structure is even possible in the first place

I assume I need 4x Velociraptors for a proper RAID 10? Please advise

Thanks,
John

In any raid setup other than JBOD, you must use disks of the same space (GB) and speed (RPM). You CANNOT set up any raid other than jbod with 2 velociraptors and 2 WD 7200 RPM black drives.

For best performance, the 4+ velociraptors in raid 10 would be there. You could also consider doing 4 velociraptors in raid 5 and have a 5th in a hot spare position ready to go if the array fails. Also, you might want to consider 600 GB raptors if that's the way you go, but the WD blacks should be fast enough in a raid 10 or raid 5, and would be much more cost effective.

WD black drives, i stay the hell away from these in any raid setup.

Just google them in raid and look at the thousands of pages of people complaining they are prone to timeout issues.

That is not true. Lets say you want to do a RAID 1 mirror with one Caviar Black and one Velociraptor. You can easily do that, the resulting volume would be the size of the smallest disc in the array, in this case the raptor.

Now b/c of the differences in drives it would be highly inadvisable to mix those drives, but you can use different drives and different capacity drives in various RAID arrays.

Just use 4xVelociraptors. Or buy 2 more Caviar Blacks. Or don't, TLER.

You want matching HDDs for optimal performance. The slowest and smallest drive limits the array.

How big is the DB? What kind of data? Can you cache data on a SSD or RAMDisk? Are you primary keys and indexes good?

Wow thanks for the quick response everyone. Yeah I kind of realize I ordered too hastily afterwards lol.. I was just thinking I would make an image and then split it later onto the velociraptor. I used one for quite some time although not in RAID so I figured they would fare well. Hmm maybe I should order two more Cavier Black instead... or two more raptors... lol

DB is isn't too big. I haven't thoroughly research exactly how big the db is but tbh, I just know that takes a bit to pull up the overall invoices. My ISM is done through someone else. I considered SSD but I wasn't sure how they would perform overtime. Hope I interpreted your questions correctly lol.

Depending on DB, you may benefit from installing a SSD and cache your most recent invoices. I don't know how your DB is setup but taking a long time to retrieve invoices is odd. There should be a unique identifier for each and that should be a key.

If the DB is for mostly data retrieval, then a SSD would be great. Retrievals are often random reads. SSDs only have issues with lots of writes.

Duckie, Thanks again for your input! The DB doesn't take a long time to retrieve the invoice but rather the list of invoices over time. For instances, a list of invoices for just this year. The DB is more of a complicated POS system, requiring both written and reads. Any suggestions?

I just changed my order to 4x 500gb WD RE4s. I don't' have a dedicated RAID controller yet so will be using on-board and software Raid. Will image my current Server 2008 R2 using the built-in software. Any major issues with this setup? Your time is much appreciated.
