It's pretty ridiculous that all you Americans immediately think this is related to the problem in Japan, you know it's not just Canadians that get our drinking water from the great lakes.
Why are you grouping all of us together over a simple mistake? The whole title isn't on the front page.

A better article on the subject:
http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/03...or-water-leak/

It's tritium. It's incredibly short-lived, and doesn't produce hardly any harmful radioactivity at all.

The increase in "radioactivity" in the water is 0.01% of the allowed levels for water sources, plus it will be gone in a few weeks since it's such a relatively short-lived nuclide, plus the levels are so low that they'll have no effect on the wildlife.

To answer how this is possible, no doubt the reactor uses water from the lake for cooling, and that this "leak" wasn't accidental.

73000 liters is not a leak that's a dump. The way they structure billing in here in Canada we (the consumers) will pay for the clean up anyway just like we're paying for the legal fees from the class action lawsuit won against them by the public... that's right everyone's bill goes up almost $2 because of that.

Well, when you have a flow rate of 1 million gallons or more per hour, a few thousand gallon leak is nothing.

Way to fail AP. Way to NOT mention that the leaked stuff was tritium, with a low level of radiation AND a very short life span. ******* press makes me want to kill babies.

Thats awesome I live walking distance from lake Ontario. No wonder I am 6foot7 damn radiation.

Well in the news this will pale in comparison to Japan. On top of that how many will see radiation in the title and pass it by thinking its another Japan story. Now is the best time for the company to release this information since it'll just be most swept under the carpet and forgotten.

The difference is you can rebuild immediately after the accident. After a major nuclear accident, it will take decades or centuries before it is safe again for human inhabitation.
