need some input!

Ok here goes, please leave all negative hateful comments at the door! I just finished my sig rig , and tossed two gts 250,s in it to tide me over , till i can afford high end video!

So i plan on a single 580 , 590 then sli later if needed. Mabey even a 6990 ( even though im a gtx kinda guy) But money is real tight right now.
So here is my question should i toss in a couple of gtx 550ti, at less than 140 a pop or just wait and get a real card. I could afford the 550,s tommorow but who knows when i can scrape up 500-700+.
Let me just say i am pretty suprised with how well the 250,s work, so would the 550,s be a worth while upgrade or not! (dont see any bechmarks or specs on them)

A couple of 550 will cost you about 149$ per card. Currect me if I'm wrong?
Which is about 300$.

A 6970 cost about 340$, and a 6950 cost about 275$ at the 2GB version.

All these costs came from newegg.com. I'm not living in the US and don't know if you get them cheaper or not.

A 6950 with 2GB will most likely perform as good or better than the 550s in SLI, or at least very close.
And you can CFX it with the 6990 for a 3-GPU setup later on, or with another 6970 if you unlock it, or whatever. AMD is very flexable.
So if money is tight, I would more consider this option over the 550 in SLI.

I like to break the cards down into their raw performance numbers and compare...

2xGTS250 SLI (operating!)
Pixel fill rate: 23.6GP/s
Texture fill rate: 94.5GT/s
memory bandwidth: 128GB/s or 141GB/s (depending on model)
GFLOPS: 1410
TDP: 290W

2xGTX550 SLI ($300)
Pixel fill rate: 43.2GP/s
Texture fill rate: 57.6GT/s
memory bandwidth: 197GB/s
GFLOPS: 1382
TDP: 232W

Single GTX580: ($460)
Pixel fill rate: 37.1GP/s
Texture fill rate: 49.4GT/s
memory bandwidth: 192GB/s
GFLOPS: 1581
TDP: 244W

Monkey wrench:
2xGTX470 SLI: ($380 [recertified PNYs from the egg])
Pixel fill rate: 48.5GP/s
Texture fill rate: 68GT/s
memory bandwidth: 268GB/s
GFLOPS: 2177
TDP: 430W

Interesting comparison:
Single GTX460:
Pixel fill rate: 21.6GP/s
Texture fill rate: 37.8GT/s
memory bandwidth: 115GB/s
GFLOPS: 907
TDP: 160W

--------------

Those GTS250s are very overlooked and powerful cards. The main limiting factor is the pixel fill rate. The Pixel fill rate was adequate in it's day, when most people were running less resolution (1280x1024 and 1600x900 were more common). 1080P "HD" and higher resolutions have gone mainstream since then and the pixel fill rate has become a bottleneck on more and more games (depending on game engine architecture). In your case, having the cards in SLI is bringing the fill rate and memory bandwidth up to the level of a GTX460 1GB, which does not suffer from "fall-off-the-map" fill-rate bottlenecking at 1920x1080 and 1920x1200. The result is very acceptable performance that almost anyone would be more than happy with for modern gaming.

I think you should just wait until you can afford your "big upgrade" later on. At which point, you should look into going triple-SLI with the best bang-for-buck high end cards you can get your hands on. Right now that would be GTX470s (you could go triple with these for less than $600 right now), but maybe GTX570s will come down in price enough to make them price competitive by then. Oh.. and of course I expect you'll toss a single-slot-width card in the middle there for Physx right?

Eric

WOW!!
Thanks for the great input!! I was only thinking about the 550's , because there cheap and newer. I did suspect my current setup was amost as good . ( and paid for ) I agree my 250,s perform pretty darn good playing black ops.

This was never meant to be my final upgrade, Just some instant gratification i guess

So i guess i will stick to the plan, and wait and buy a good high end card and build from that!! Thanks again for guiding me through my moment of weekness.

God... what is your problem?
Did you dog just bite you leg off or something that your brain stopped working?

Did I say anything about crossfire? about two cards?

I actually compared a single 6950 at 270$ vs two 550s at 300$.

I just said, that he can get a 6950 now, which is cheaper, and pair it later on with a 6990 or whatever he wants.

Reading is very complicated I hear.
Please go away.
