Well, the Xonar is still going to be better for FPS gaming than onboard from my experience. It just isn't as good as an X-Fi but it'll do pretty well with racing games, stategy, RPG, etc.
I wouldn't be so quick on dismissing his on-board audio, it may well be pretty decent depending on his motherboard.
And as I said before, if he plans on gaming, he should avoid all ASUS Xonar cards completely, as they're only good for music listening/HTPC use. They would be worse than his "garbage" on-board for gaming, since they use GX which is worthless software-level EAX emulation not officially supported by any game.Edited by Am* - 3/17/11 at 6:47am
