Crysis 2560X1600, 8AA, 6990+6970: 59 fps, 580 SLI, 32 fps. DOUBLE the framerate for the same price. 1000$ against 1000$, 2 cards against 2 cards.

Metro 2033. Same results. 6990+6970 dominating 580 SLI. Same price. Early 6990 drivers.

If only it was "two" cards vs two cards. You are running a tri-fire vs sli setup no matter how you slice the bread. Of course AMD is cheaper and you can tri-fire 3x6970's for cheaper than 580's.

The 6990 was priced to compete with sli-570's while being roughly the performance of xFire 6970's.

Edit: Now that I actually looked at the benchmarks, the tri-fire setup only seems to win at a higher than 19x1200 res, otherwise the 580's still win.

"While placing himself in the tradition of previous dual GPU Radeon, it amplifies the defects: consumption and noise burst. To propel enough air to dissipate 375 to 450 watts, there is no secret, the single turbine must climb the towers and make us forget the silence displayed at rest."

I bet even a 5ghz Sandy Bridge would struggle to drive those 3 ATI cards
