4890 performance issues?

Thread Starter
I've bought a 4890 to replace my 5450 for mu budget gaming device. I was hoping that the 4890 would have been able to play 1080p videos, but I've found them to stutter a bit. Should that happen? Im using Gom Media Player and the latest Catalyst 4890 drivers.

No, 4890 can play HD flawlesly. There is something wrong with drivers/codecs.

Wow, that was quick, will do that after I get back from school.
BTW, based on how intensive games are, does the GPU increase its clock and spin up the fan higher? Im a bit new to GPUs.

Try using the 9 series drivers, if you can get hold of them if you still have that problem.

it "should" but it depends on drivers, use MSI afterburner to make a custom fan profile (its awesome, works far better than "onboard" fan profile)

clocks should do its thing automatically.

and yes, a 4890 should run movies/games amazingly. two of my friends have that card and they run WoW full settings, with great FPS. just be careful of the heat, the card gets a bit hot (fan profile will help with this significantly.)

use riva tuner to overclock/ contol fan speeds The fan won't go up very much at higher temps so Id at least turn the fan speed up. but at 100% the fan sounds like a hair drier. I kept my 4870 at about 65% when i had it

edit: never tried msi afterburner with my 4870 but it does great with my gtx470

No to all of the above-
If you are "new to GPUs", do NOT touch a thing on MSI Afterburner. It should only be used by ppl who know exactly how to proceed, you CAN burn your GPU using it.

On your question- yes, the GPU increases the core frequency when it is being used. This happens automatically.
When the card reaches 80C, the fan will start spinning faster. Max temps the card should reach are 90C. By that time the fan should spin at 40% or more in order to keep the temps under 100C.
Again, this all happens automatically.
