HP Elite 7100 Microtower GPU Upgrade

Hi,

I bought this pc "HP Elite 7100 Microtower" about 2 months ago. Everything seems to be perfect for me, except the graphics card. It's a cr*ppy GT 320, and it's a very weak card (Hell, even a GeForce 7950 GT is better). So i was thinking about upgrading to GTX 580.. i know it's a big leap, but is it possible? Here's my specifications:

Chassis Dimensions: (H x W x D) 38.5 x 18.5 x 41.6 cm (15.14 x 7.27 x 16.36 in)

Processor: Intel Core i7-860 (2.80 GHz)

Chipset: Intel® H57 Express

Memory (RAM): 6GB

Power supply: ATX power supply - Passive PFC, 300 W maximum rated power.

Don't know whats my motherboard really, couldn't find it's model.

I do know that i need a new PSU. I'm buying this:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-CMPSU-650TX-650-Watt-Certified-Supply/dp/B000X24ISU/ref=dp_cp_ob_e_tit"]Amazon.com: Corsair CMPSU-650TX 650-Watt TX Series 80 Plus Certified Power Supply: Electronics[/ame]...

I did some measuring in the case, and i think it fits, I'm not sure though.

I bought this computer with the monitor for almost 5,500 SR (Which is almost 1,500 USD), and can't even run Oblivion with a satisfying fps..

So, please, someone tell me, will the PSU, AND the Graphics Card both fit properly, and work without any problems?

And tell me if i missed any important info.

one thing im gonna tell is. Its not worth it. Buy a HAF 932, New mobo, gpu, and psu. Its gonna be a big headache.
It looks like its atx though. You could replace the power supply and gpu but i dont know if the hp has a special connector from the psu to the mobo.

I currently have a Evga GTX 260 in this exact case (different mobo though) for my HTPC and for folding. It fits.. with some wire adjustment. The back of the card is basically sitting on top of the cables for the hdd's.

In order for everything to work, I added a Antec Earthwatts 500 psu and cut a hole in the side panel to fit a 80mm fan on. It's basically blowing air right on the 260.

The 260 folds at a constant 60C. biggrin.gif

Thanks for your reply!

I can't really afford to buy anything after i buy the PSU and GPU.. oh, and i forgot about the shipping. I live in the middle east and I'm ordering these from the US, which costs around 120$ shipping. That's 518.49$ GPU + 86.67$ PSU + 120$ shipping = 725.16$ which is almost 2719.35SR (Riyals). Oh, and on top of that, half of the money ain't mine, i borrowed it. This is all because of hp and their cr*ppy case's. So, i don't have many choices here.

Could you please tell me, why won't this go well? i read on the hp forum, a guy with the same case i have installed a gtx 570 (which is the same length and width of a gtx 580) and he didn't face any problems so far.. i think..

Oh, and what do you mean by special connector?

You mean a 10.5 inches long gtx 260? if so, than that's great. But is yours 60c on load?

Your CPU would probably bottleneck.
Once again...

Yes, Evga GTX 260 216.

Yes, Folding puts the gpu at 99% usage, i.e., full load. It stays at 60c during Folding and drops down to mid 40's when idle.

EDIT: A GTX 580 would probably be way too hot for this case. The 260 tends to run really cool. For example, in my HAF 932, my 570 Folds @ 68c and thats with a ton of airflow. I wouldn't dare run it in the Hp case, not enough air flow (even if you added a fan) IMO.

Thanks for you reply, but i already got past that, it won't. Already asked that question on another forum, no one talked about it being bottleneck.. and i've seen like 4 people on this forum and on other forums who have a gtx 580 with an i7 860. biggrin.gif

Yeah, but all of them are overclocked. cool.gif

A Lynnfield at 2.8GHz can definitely bottleneck a GTX580.

with the case closed up? and at stock clocks? probably. for fermi that temp is fine though, but it will likely heat up your CPU too though. you might want to get a 560 or 460, which would be a lot cooler, and still be a huge upgrade.

it would work but id at least buy a new case like the antec 100 or something like that for cheap. and it looks like that motherboard uses a 4 pin connector not 8 pin for the cpu. wich is fine so id say go for it with a new case!
