6990 + 6970 Questions

Thread Starter
Greetings, I've got a question regarding the 6990. I'm considering purchasing a 6990 in addition to a 6970 and I'm wondering if I can safely use the bios switch to overclock the 6990 to match the 6970 speeds allowing for a trifire configuration. However, I'm not sure if my power supply and motherboard are good enough to support this configuration since when using the bios switch on the 6990, it uses more power than normal. Here are my machine's current relevant specs...

AMD Phenom II X6 1100T overclocked to 4.1GHz
ASUS Crosshair IV Extreme
2 1TB SATA-III WD Caviar Black drives
16GB (4x4GB) G.SKILL Ripjaws running at 1600 (9-9-9-24)
Antec 1200W High Current Pro power supply

My questions are this...

1. Is my system powerful enough to run the 6990 with the BIOS switch set overclocking to 6970 speeds? I'm worried it could fry since it can use upwards of 450W of power over the 375W of normal.

2. If so, is it still powerful enough to run a 6970 with it in trifire mode with the overclocked CPU and 16GB of RAM and the potential sound card (probably a Asus Xonar STX or something)?

3. If I can't use the OC mode on the 6990, can I still trifire with a 6970 (underclocked) that'll have speeds that still exceed two 580s in SLI?

4. Are there any good clear programs that monitor power usage for the various components (and perhaps have a overall power consumption number)?

Thanks a lot guys!

P.S. And yes, I don't want to use three 6970s due it'll use up the space used for my potential sound card so I'm trying to minimize the cards to two, hehe.

If I can run tri 480s oc'd in my sig, your 1200W should do easily with 69xx tri-fire with oc'd CPU/GPUs.

You could have stop right there. No need for the rest of the text. One of the best PSU on the market.

You could drive 3 or 4 6990 with that PSU! Don't worry.

My Corsair 1200AX is not even sweating pushing my 6990+6970 with 3 dedicated waterloops, 3 pumps, 17 fans, etc.

You will be more then fine. Go for it.

My 6990+6970 is rock-stable with 11.4 preview drivers. Not noisy, not warm. Working fine with ''the switch'' moved.

The only ''problem'' is your CPU. I think it will hold back those graphic cards. I'm running my i7 2600K at 5.1 Ghz and it's barely enough!

That processor isn't limiting anything maybe if you benchmark all day... but if your playing at 1920x1080 or higher it's going to be equal to any processor.

- Your system, including your PSU will be able to handle the power of your tri-fire setup.

- When installing the new card, set your current card to default clocks and settings. When using any tool to overclock, by default it should bring all the cards to the lowest clock to start with. From there you use your OC tool to overclock them all at the same time (parallel with each other to achieve the same results).

- Unless you are running a triple monitor setup, you will not see speeds greater than SLI 580's. Someone recently posted this, and the SLI configuration bested the tri-fire setup in anything smaller than 25x16res.

- I would not use the "OC Mode" on the 6990. I'm not sure if it would work, but I would use a program to set it manually so the clocks all match.

- HW-Monitor, GPU-Z, RealTemp (I think?), MSI AfterBurner all monitor temps, speed etc.

Perfect! That's why I said ''problem''. Because I was not sure. I'm an Intel CPU guy, so didn't want to give him the wrong info. Thanks for the clarification.

The 6990+6970 are bandwitdh beasts. The more the better.

I go for which ever processor suites my needs best and is also fun overclocking. I prefer AMD because I've been overclocking them since Athlon XP but 1366 is also very fun to overclock. If Ivy bridge is the same as Sandy Bridge when it comes to overclocking I will end up sticking to Bulldozer.

Huh? Not sure it would work? Not a good advice IMHO.... It's working perfectly fine. Takes 2 seconds to flip the switch, and now you have 2X 6970 speed. Genious idea from AMD. I know, I have one. Do you? Took me 2 seconds, and my 6990 and 6970 are running in Tri-Fire, all at the same voltage and speed.

And it's ALOT better then using any programs out there, since it's loading a different BIOS. Clean, elegant and simple solution. No need to flash your BIOS.

And don't be surprised if Nvidia start putting BIOS switches on their next generation of GPUs. I wouldn't be surprised. Since it's a great idea.

And with CCC, you can get to 1200/1500. I'm able to do 1000/1400 on my 6990+6970 combo without any voltage bump, using the ''6970'' BIOS on the 6990.

Waiting for my waterblock, and then I will flash my BIOS 2 (the other one is read only) to raise voltage and speed. If I make a mistake, switch the flip back, load readable only BIOS, problem gone. Then reflash. Nice and easy.

Don't give advices on thing you don't own or don't know anything about. That switch is pure genious. So good that Nvidia will try to copy it. Just wait.

Said I wasn't sure if it would work, not saying that it couldn't. Knowing how overclocking works with crossfire and not knowing how the switch works in correlation with overclocking a tri-fire setup with those cards, is why I suggested against. If it works, then fine and dandy and the more power to ya I guess.

And if I said "ya, it works" and it bricks his card because the clocks screw up? How is that advice any better? It's better advice to mention that it may not work and figure out later that it's fine, then to tell someone it works fine and have it brick your component because something went wrong.

Ok xsf. No problems.

But believe me, Nvidia will follow, I'm sure. That BIOS switch is really a genious idea for us power-user. I'm sure alot of people flashing their graphic card BIOS for the first time were really scared and sweating... Be it Nvidia users or AMD users.

No more risks of bricking your card trying to flash your BIOS to higher voltage/speed. The presence of the read only BIOS make it all easy and dandy to go back if you are stuck in a ''fail'' moment. No more bricking your card.

It took me 2 seconds to flip my switch and match my 6990 to my 6970. Pure awesome-sauce.
