Frostbite uses a proprietary physics engine. Even Frostbite 1.5 (BC2) had better usage of the physics engine than most physx games I've ever seen other than tech demos. BF3 is going to be using Frostbite 2.0 which is supposed to be leaps and bounds better.

i know plenty of people that have liked mafia 2, mirrors edge, batman, metro 2033 alot more with physx than without. they thought it was more than pointless. pointless = useless. there's a use for dedicated physx cards. it's just not marketed/used correctly. i think we can all agree to that at least.

if nvidia was smart they would make it open source and then reap the rewards. imagine indie games with physx.

i completely forgot but i believe cryengine 2 was the same way. not sure about cryengine 3 but it definitely could be.

I can see it if you have an amd/ati card, and want dedicated physx. Even better if you used to have an nvidia card like an 8800/9800gt or something, and don't want it to sit in the closet. Even with cards like that dedicated for physx, the gpu usage on the physx card isnt very high. Do people with an Nvidia card for their main gpu take much of a hit if they don't have one dedicated for physx?

Congratulations-you just named FOUR out of the half-dozen games anyone cares about that have Physx GPU abilities. LOTS of games can do Physx, around 200-300, MOST (i.e. 90%+) cannot off-load the calculation to the GPU.

Of the 20 or so games that can do GPU Physx, 75% or so are titles like Hot Dance Party 1 and Hot Dance Party 2, that no one cares or has heard of.

there's no need to use caps or be smart about it. i never said you were wrong, i said it's not used properly which is the same thing you keep saying. lol

the games that do use it properly are better with it.

Cryengine 2 uses the Physx API but it's only a software implementation and is unable to offload to the GPU.
