As the software becomes more demanding, the hardware is going to become more powerful to support it... In this case, RAM speed/size will increase.

Simple as that.

But, who knows when we'll reach the 1TB point of RAM.

My workplace has multiple SGI Octane III workstation machines. Although they only have 192gb of ram totaled and only a few nodes mounted. I believe the system supports upto 960gb of ram. I dont work at a data center, just to clear up the misconception.
