There are more differences between SATA 2 and 3. They are different protocols so they handle data a little differently, not to say this is a huge factor. Im just tired for people saying speed is the only difference and mechanical drives cant use the technology.

A single mechanical hard drive will not saturate a sata II connection.
If the difference was measurable it would be small if even worth mentioning....
Sata II and Sata III are backwards compatible so don't worry if you do buy a sata III drive it will work in a sata II port...

the f3 for me in ohio here is 65 bucks free shipping they want 75 bucks plus 10 bucks to ship in canada THATS CRAZy maybe another site has it for cheaper....

The difference between a caviar black and a spinpoint f3 for your purpose word docs and basic computer usage i would go with the cheaper drive both good manufactures and both great drives... Doing such small tasks on a pc you wouldn't notice a difference... but your wallet will...

Hope this helped...

Wow people.
Way to fail at knowing how SATA works.
SATA 3 offers both 3GB/s and 6GB/s speeds.
SATA 2 offers 3GB/s speed but has slightly less throughput and uses a slightly different interface than SATA3 3GB/s.

SATA3 6GB/s is a waste of money because even though the controller may run fast enough for it, SATA 3 cant actually move 6GB/s.
Its a marketing gimmick for the people in this thread (apparently).

Just get a basic SATA3 HDD and save money.
The F3 is fantastic.

whats the major difference between 32mb and 64mb? does it affect speed?

It's not really a cache, it's a buffer. Its occasional use as a cache by the drive is secondary to its primary purpose as a buffer between the drive and the SATA connector, which operate at different speeds. More is certainly better, but there are diminishing returns, so 64MB buffer may have only a slight improvement or no noticeable improvement over 32MB.

There's no such thing as SATA 6. There have only been three of them!

The primary difference you'll notice is the maximum bandwidth: 1.5Gb/s, 3Gb/sec or 6Gb/sec. In reality 20% of this is coding overhead, so the maximum bandwidth you can actually USE is 1.2Gb/sec (150MB/sec), 2.4Gb/sec (300MB/sec) or 4.8Gb/sec (600MB/sec).

SATA 1, which is not often seen these days, can be saturated by a current mechanical hard disk drive.

SATA 2, which is on the way out these days, can be saturated by a current solid-state drive.

SATA 3, which is on the way in these days, ... nothing invented can saturate it yet.

All of these can use the same physical connectors.
