Actually, they would. That's the whole point behind this. Money doesn't solve everything, especially in the open-source world.

Richard Stallman would pursue Google until every last bit of the violation is dealt with. Fines won't work for him.

I don't think that would apply to something like angry birds.

Second, what incentive is there to trying to open source a bunch of proprietary software written for a somewhat open OS? Essentially saying screw you to anyone who wants to develop something for linux, but doesn't want to release the full source.

Proprietary programs can use GPL code but the two must be as detached from each other as possible. They should basically be two separate applications that communicate with one another. If the GPL code is to be incorporated such that it is essentially a single application, the whole application must be GPL. If a GPL library is just being linked to, then the rest of the project can possibly be placed under a GPL-compatible licence, and not the GPL itself.

If this is like other incidents with other companies, Google will receive a letter telling them to change the code within x amount of days and Google will comply and the issue will be dropped.

Google could switch to Meego and avoid this type of situation entirely but...

edit: It was WAAAAY more than just 700 lines of code. It was 700 FILES.
Quote:
"Google copied 2.5 megabytes of code from more than 700 Linux kernel header files with a homemade program that drops source code comments and some other elements, and daringly claims (in a notice at the start of each generated file) that the extracted material constitutes 'no copyrightable information,'" Mueller writes.

This is why Android isn't good and why Meego should be supported. As long as everyone must wait till Google's good-and-ready, it can't be said that it is true open source.

Itching to put some sweet, crunchy AOSP Honeycomb on your hardware of choice? You might have quite a wait, as BusinessWeek reports that Google will not release the Android 3.0 source code in the near future, and we just received confirmation of the same. Google forwarded us the following statement, which pretty much says it all:

Quote:
Android 3.0, Honeycomb, was designed from the ground up for devices with larger screen sizes and improves on Android favorites such as widgets, multi-tasking, browsing, notifications and customization. While we're excited to offer these new features to Android tablets, we have more work to do before we can deliver them to other device types including phones. Until then, we've decided not to release Honeycomb to open source. We're committed to providing Android as an open platform across many device types and will publish the source as soon as it's ready.

Don't you dare say one bad thing about linux, ever. Ever. Its the best thing that ever happened to computers and if you disagree then you just don't know anything about computers and open source is the best thing ever and linux is the best thing, ever. If you disagree then you clearly have no idea how linux works cause if you did you'd never need windows again! Least of all to play games! Linux is so much better than everything!!

Something about General Public License? Or was it general purpose license... no it was the former. So at this point I'd have to ask you if you even know what it is. Cause I sure as he11 know what it sounds like. Sounds like your precious "open source" isn't all that the linux trumpeters want everyone to think it is.
