Under $600 new build

post #1 of 21
Thread Starter
My sister is getting an early graduation present because she has been getting stellar grades in High School. Her POS Dell is horrible and our parents are giving her a budget of no more than $600 for a new PC.

She is keeping the Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, DVD drive, and will be wiping her current dell HDD to use as a storage drive.
The most intense application will probably be BF3 later on this year so I want to know if the following will be able to handle it on a 1920x1080p display that she will upgrade to later on this year in time for BF3.

I came up with the following to stay under $600

Thermaltake V3 Black $40 (promo)

Antec Earthwatts 500w $54 (promo)

GSkill 4GB DDR3 1333 $47

A-DATA 64GB SSD $110

Biostar 880G + Sapphire 6850 $225

Athlon II X3 435 + Hyper 212+ $97

Will this AMD CPU bottleneck the 6850?

Grand Total Shipped: $581.95

i think you might get so bottle necks if you have the crazy gpu, perhaps atting the processor to athlon x4?

Yeah that was what I was worried about, We are putting the Hyper 212+ on it to try and OC it to at least 3.4Ghz and then also unlock it to a quad with the Biostars ACC feature.

Your sister is going to play BF3 huh? Anyway, don't get an SSD on a $600 budget. I wouldn't even suggest an SSD to someone with an unlimited budget. That money would be better spent on a X4 955. Just $130 right now. Plus, there will definitely be some bottlenecking with your current choice.

That. Definitely not worth spending 1/6th of your budget on something that is probably superfluous. I'd spend that money on the x4 955 as well.

There are a LOT of things you want to change. Especially the RAM.... 1333 CL8 is first of all never optimal for the price, but with an SSD is a definite no as you won't be able to use its' full potential.
Phenom II x4 820 2.8Ghz C2 4MB L3 - $100
Xigmatek GAIA SD1283 - $30, SHIPPED (believe me, 3 heatpipes is better than 4 and this is cheaper counting shipping)
Kingston HyperX Blu 1600 CL9 - $45, $30 AR after promo [see link] (give it a nice boost to 1600 CL8 or CL7-8-7 and you're good with the SSD)
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003DS7IGA"]OCZ Vertex 2 50GB SSD[/ame] - $100
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002UDK9U6/"]NZXT GAMMA[/ame] - $40 shipped (Amazon)
Sapphire 6850 + Biostar A770E3 - $210, $195 AR
Antec EA500D - $54 after promo
6850 gift card - $10 off

Total before rebates: $569
After rebates: $539
$50 saved, everything is consistently better. Guaranteed quad core, better cooler (for price too), much better RAM, faster Sandforce SSD, better case, motherboard of equal quality for cheaper. You win sir.

Those that say an SSD isn't worth it have obviously never used one before. If you can afford it do so.

I would pick a better processor over an SSD any day, wouldnt you? x)
