Sharing printer on network, computer won't sleep

I have a desktop pc running XP connected to a FIOS router via LAN port. The printer is connected to the desktop and set for sharing. The laptop is running Vista and accesses the wireless network and is able to use the printer as long as the desktop is on. The problem I'm having is that the laptop will not sleep unless the desktop is is in sleep mode or off. f I restrict access to the desktop from the laptop, it sleeps fine but no access to the printer. So it seems that the network is somehow keeping the laptop awake. There have been a few instances when neither pc will enter sleep mode.

Both computers are using NIS 2011 and the firewall is set for protected trust level. Everything works fine except for sleep mode, especially on the laptop. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you mean it won't go to sleep or won't stay asleep once you force it? You might need to go into your Device Manager and set the properties of the Network Adapter to not allow it to wake your computer from sleep.

I still can't figure this out. I think it has to be a setting on one of the pc's that is keeping the network active and not letting it sleep. If anyone has any ideas, please post them.
