[TPU] AMD Phenom II 980 - 3.7GHz - Page 9

This.

As the yield and quality of the chips produced increases (Naturally over time), they can release chips at higher clock speeds within the same TDP, it's nice they got it in 125w though, usually its 140w for high-end AMDs?

The better Denebs will all clock the same, this is just more likely to be one of those better Denebs.

Um... wait, what?
Wrong, the 940 BE has a much older IMC (The Athlon64 one) and no DDR3 support, plus the entire CPU/NB situation isn't as overclockable and this chip will easily get past 4Ghz, with a few samples probably reaching ~4.5Ghz on water.

This will only beat a Core i7 if the load is using only one or two cores and the Core i7 is a 920 at stock speeds...

L3 cache makes a hell of a lot more difference than 8GB RAM does, I'd have sunk the money into a SSD or a faster Hard Drive.

Even the 3.33Ghz ones would be close, although it would definitely give i5 buyers something to think about.

Phenom 970 = $170
Athlon II X3 = $70
Compare it with a Quad so the price is fair, transcoding videos does get a decent improvement from an extra core so unless you have a tight budget to fit, chances are at least an Athlon II x4 will be in it.

At the same time, it's just a 955 C3 really, so I'm not too excited.
This sums it up really.

In WinRAR, you can see the difference.

In nearly everything else, you can't.

At launch: 125w tdp.

After launch: 95w, I'd guess.

Just like how the Phenom II launched at 3Ghz and 125w TDP, now it's at the same TDP with 700Mhz more.

4.6Ghz on water.

In terms of clock speed and overclockability, Phenom II C3 matches Nehalem and has for a while now. (Most chips hitting around 4.2 max, the better chips hitting 4.4 or 4.5 and golden ones hitting 4.6)

Forgetting motherboard prices, a decent AMD board is cheaper than a decent Intel one down here in Australia at least.

And that $40 difference could be the difference between a GTX 560 and GTX 570, which would show a much bigger performance difference.

If people get higher than average overclocks on these, I might get one instead of Bulldozer unless a Bulldozer second stepping/22nm shrink is launched first, my Phenom II treats me well, but my PSU blowing up didn't exactly do it good, lost 300Mhz on my max OC from it.

Call me crazy, but I'd rather see a 32nm refresh of a couple Phenom II's than a little bump in clock speed. They've already come so far with their own improvements since the beginning of K10 it would have to be fantastic.

I'm preparing to get flamed...

This is insane. Wonder what's the stock voltage for these chips...

You're joking, right? "Will it?" http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/186?vs=288 The 980s extra 100mhz aren't going to narrow that gap, especially once that 2500k is overclocked..

You tell me.

If this comes in any where near 200 USD, you'd have to be a fanboy (or blissfully unaware) to buy it.

975's are currently $190 so I think my price estimate of $200-220 is pretty close for debut.

And I could see once its oced it should be in the low-mid 4ghz and still running on an am3 board... cheaper than an 1155 that you would want.

Same here would have been interesting to see how far one could clock under water but wont happen now, they would have had to tape it out ages ago.

Deneb isn't a slouch though, and if the GPU actually has the 400sps that we've heard, there's a decent chance it could actually take down a 8800GT.

we're discussing Central Processing Units here. not motherboards. everybody knows AMD boards are cheaper because their chipset has less features and their sockets are cheaper. beside motherboards do not account for pure CPU performance differences.

Where have you been i7 920's have long been deactivated as have the 930s. They have been replaced by the i7 940.

AMD isn't the only one releasing higher binned chips, Intel does it too. Not sure where the 9 page long threads are for those are though.
