Startup Error: Bad Company 2

I just bought Battlefield: Bad Company 2 yesterday from the EA Store, started a EADM account, and downloaded and installed the game with EADM. Opening the game shortcut (or the direct .exe) gives me this error message:

There is a problem connecting to the server. Please ensure your internet connection is active. If the problem persists try again later.
All of my Steam games work online. StarCraft II works. Internet works. I've redownloaded and reinstalled the game. I've disabled KIS. I've added an exception to Windows Firewall. I've enabled and disabled UPNP in the router (Linksys WRT610N). No dice.

EA Forums shows many people with the same issue from March 2010 with no resolution.

Has anyone here had this issue and resolved it?

You can try to "Run as administrator".

Also, do you have the latest patch installed? The latest game version is 602574. To update, navigate to "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Electronic Arts\\Battlefield Bad Company 2\\" and run "BFBC2Updater.exe".

Try completely closing and disabling Windows Firewall (temporarily disable any services, etc related to it). It might be blocking BC2 despite the opened port.
Are you using anything besides Windows Firewall?

also disable user account control if you haven't already. also you may need to manually update punkbuster.

Completely turned off Windows Firewall and Kaspersky Internet Security.

UAC is gone. Punkbuster has been manually updated.

When you added an exception to Windows Firewall, did you also do so for Kaspersky?
Also try bypassing your router and going directly to the wall.
