Just like the title says. I was thinking of unlocking the 6950 but I don't know if there are any specific brands that are beater for unlocking.

As long as you get a reference design 6950 2 GB card, it's almost guaranteed to unlock. I unlocked a couple of Powercolor cards last weekend for a customer, and with the techpowerup tool, it's a cinch.

It really all comes down to cost. The 6950, unlocked or not, would obviously outperform a 5870. How much are you gonna have to pay for that performance bump?

I thought 5870 beats 6970, but the 2gb on the 6950 is a consideration anyway.

well for me in canada the 6950 is only like $40-$50 more, but is the performance boost worth the cost?

Imo, no. my 2gb wont be used unless I actually use a bigger screen/more screens. So one gb 5870 will do the job well. Mine has been maxing with no problems with many games. A little struggle on metro 2033 maxed out 1080p

I recently purchased two 6950's (2Gb), have both flashed to 6970's. Currently running 900/1400. At first temps were out of control under full load, exited furmark when approaching the mid 90's. Decided to get a new case and coolers for both cards. ended up with two arctic cooling accelero xtreme plus fans. temps under load now hit mid 60's sometimes lower 70's. Anyway, point being that im very happy with the performance of these cards in a xfire setup

You are thinking about the P.O.S. 6870, a underclocked 5870 could beat that.

The 6970 is a much better performer, almost as good as a 5970.

This. Any 69xx card will outperform a 5870.

sigh, my bad, i thought it was 6850 vs 5870. Not 6950 vs 5870. I would too get the 6950 over any 580xx
