Yes but they won't support all the BD features, ergo less performance out of his mobo. Also your mobo won't fail any time soon, and there is no point buying a current motherboard now and then another one when you want to properly support and use a Bulldozer CPU

It'll definitely fail, perhaps over time, due to the VRMs being 4+1, cheap, and unheatsinked, and completely uncooled due to the tower cooler (at least 70% of all VRM failures happen with tower coolers or water cooling making no air get to VRMs). ASRock is known to be rather cheap in this area.

This, or he can keep it at stock and not run prime95 for 12 hours straight and he'll be fine. He can grab a nice AM3+ board for like 150, or grab a more expensive one now that is BIOS upgradable

Officially AMD says that Bulldozer could run on AM3 Motherboards if they wanted them to, but AM3 cannot take full advantage of Bulldozer's architecture. It might just be marketing to get one to buy a new socket--although that is an Intel tactic, AMD has always been much more upgrade friendly--but to play it safe I'd just wait for AM3+ to upgrade your board. At least when Bulldozer is finally released, there is bound to be performance comparisions between Bulldozer on either socket.

Glad to see that you fixed the ram issue though!

EDIT: If you don't want to wait, I think ASRock is releasing the first AM3+ Board in the very near future, it's based on the 890fx rather than the 990fx however.

Time will show who is right, I have no time for that thread, it's becoming less interesting with every post.
