ARCHOS 101 Internet Tablet Vs IPad (first generation)

Thread Starter

Here's the deal, i have been offered a Ipad 16 Gb (First generation) still factory seal in the box for 380 dollars. However, i've been looking at the ARCHOS 101 (

) This tablet has an HDMI port and allows for me to inset a SD card. Before when i was just looking at the Ipad i wasn't at all intrested in the idea of steaming video to my TV via HDMI port, until i saw the Archos. Which should i buy in you opinions? Also, are there any other tabs that i should consider?

That's a bit of a tough one. The iPad is far and away a higher end device. It's got a better screen, a bit better processor, far better build, hugely better battery etc. As a big android user, I'd even say the iPad has a better tablet OS (I hated froyo on the nook color, so I put honeycomb on it) However, it obviously doesn't have SD/HDMI.

In my opinion, I'd buy the iPad. If the archos had honeycomb, it might be more competitive, but the archos was designed to be cheap. The iPad was designed for quality. They both pretty much hit their mark.

What other tablets could you recommended that also have an HDMI port, and yes at the moment i am also leaning more toward the Ipad.

For the price range you are looking at, none that I can think of. However, I just remembered something. Apple has an HDMI out adapter. The iPad 1 does not support mirroring, but neither does the Archos. You should be able to use your iPad as basically a touchpad for your TV at that point

Well, the Archos tablets may get 3.0 through the community once the source files are released.

Also, Archos is planning to upgrade their Arnova tablets to Rockchip 2919 and replace the resistive screens with capacitive touch screens in April. So maybe you should wait a bit.

IIRC, the iPad 1 only outputs 720p max though.

The archos is probably the same. Even if it could output 1080p, it probably can't play anything in it It is widescreen though, so that may be a plus. I actually just read something on how HDMI-out on the iPad works. It transmits a widescreen picture, but it has a black frame around a 1024x768 picture? That seems weird. Do video apps allow it to take up more of that frame?

I'm not sure. I believe that's what happens for mirroring (you see black bars) but for outputting video it should be as much screen as it can take up. I can't say I've used the HDMI-out accessory though, I've only used 480/576p Component or Composite cables (not sure which) which play the movie normally.

That depends if you have a 1080p TV and 1080p movies and really want to watch them at 1080p. I only have a 720p TV and most of the content I watch is 576p. It's not a problem for me.

That's good news about the changing screen frame.

As for 720p, you'd have to spring for a $500 iPad 2 or $800 zoom ($600 wifi coming soon) to play 1080p on your TV.
