Q6600 and Me!

Thread Starter
So, I have a Q6600 CPU and an XFX nvidia 750i SLI mobo that I have been playing around with OC'ing on.

Two questions for you fellow OCN members:

1. I can only get past post with 1 ram stick of OC'ing past ~3.1 Ghz and only in my #3 slot (dual channel DDR2 mobo). Tried different ram sticks that I know work and beyond 3.1 Ghz, using 1 stick is the only way to get it to POST.
Any reasoning behind this? Mobo was bought from a friend used.

2. What voltages should I try to push past a 3.4 OC? Here's a pic of what my bios looks like for the OC menu.

Note: Cooling will not be a problem as I have a Corsair H50 on the CPU and ~72 F ambient temps.

I've managed to get 3.4 Ghz stable with those voltages (with multiplier at 8 and FSB clock up'd of course, in this pic they are at default but voltages are not.

Kinda new to OC'ing and have only done it on my Q6600 as it's all I have, tips appreciated!

First of all, try RAM at 5-5-5-15 800MHz. Also make sure to set Command Rate manually to 2T. After this, save and power down. Then try to install the other RAM stick.

If this does not work, do as above and set RAM to unlinked and select 667MHz

I'm not sure which options here correspond with those timings.

Here's a pic of my ram timings menu:

I got the 2T part but don't know how to set the rest, please specify!

Nevermind, Googled it and found out how to do that. Tried those settings with both 1 and 2 ram sticks, neither would POST. Not sure what unlinked means. Going to try 667 Mhz now though

Got it to 3.4 Ghz with both my ram sticks working, using your advice, thanks.

I can't pass 3.4 Ghz even with maxing out my voltages on everything except ram and vcore. Anything I can do about this or have I just reached my limit with my setup?

Glad to hear you made it Is that a Q6600 G0? You know, even if it's a G0 3.4GHz is pretty good on air. 3.6GHz is very difficult. Even on high-end air. Many Q6600's did 3.6GHz on high-end air with the right motherboards, but many did not.

And your motherboard is not known for being a great overclocker, and especially not with Quads. Quite frankly, you should be happy with 3.4GHz on that setup...

You're pushing some crazy volts on the VTT and NB for only 3.4. What are you running for VCore? The pic has "0.15"

this^^^
i would turn down your northbridge voltage a couple of notches.
i have a B3 Q6600 @ 3.3 with 1.39vcore,
also the performance increase is not worth the hassle. imo the difference between 3.4 and 3.6 is like 2fps in games, but with a lot more heat
also second that your mobo is not great for quads, i would be happy with 3.4 on that board

also what temps are getting running Intel burn test?
use realtemp and keep an eye on the distance to tjmax dont let it go below 20 (or higher than 80.C)

even with a h50 i bet you will have temps in the mid 70's.C

you have to run ibt properly
before running, open task manager and see the amount of free ram.
for example i have 2550mb free ram so in IBT i enter a custom amount of 2500. (just below the free amount)
then i change the threads from auto to 4 (quad core)
now every run i make i always get around 40-42 gflops. (consistent)

" I would choose 'free' memory as available memory will also make use of cache memory which must be storing data for other applications aswell. Windows may free up some physical memory from the cached memory during testing but not totally and i think the rest will be the virtual memory as a compensation.

Available = Free + (Cached - Modified)"

running just free memory will help you get higher gflops, as its just using free ram and not cached ram
this should also have 4 cores running at 100%"

this will give you more consistent gflops score, but will also make your temps higher, as more gflops, the more the cpu is stressed.
at 3.4ghz your q6600 should be reaching at least 40-42gflops.
you need to run intel burn test for 50 runs, for an overclock to be regarded as stable
(but i normally just do 10 ;-))

Highest I've seen during some Intel burn tests was 60c and yeah, it pushes like 42 gflops. I'm using 1.5 vcore as the next lowest possible is 1.375. And everything is only stable on a 1.5v NB + VTT
