Want to play with a firewall.

Thread Starter
So iam looking to make an older computer into a firewall. Iam buying it from work for 25dollars. its a

with a C2D 2.0Ghz and 4gb of ram. Mainly looking to play with this and learn a bit more about networking security. Besides what iam learning in my Classes. Only 1 Networking security class in my degree that iam currently taking and find it very interesting.

What iam looking to do right now is. Go from Uverse router to this computer which i want to be a firewall and out to a Belkin wireless router for the rest of the house. My big question is tho i believe the built in NiC on this computer is only 10/100 and the NIC iam going to buy is 10/100/1000 cause needs to be dual honed. For DSL will i even meet or break the 100? I can only install 1 Nic on this system will it work the way i want it without slowing down the internet??

Any advice on firewall software to use or anything else would be great as well. Thanks

I don't use it, but I know untangle is highly recommended as far as network control software for a dedicated machine.

unless you have an internet plan that has over 100mbps upload or download, the onboard nic is fine.

my recommendations go to pfsense and smoothwall. Very low footprint compared to untangle and very easy to use and setup.

IPCop is another one to recommend.
