Intro:
Hi everyone! After 4 months of having this HP Pavilion dm1z, I've finally been able to make time to finish my review of it. I'm very pleased with this ultra-portable laptop, and I know that others will be too!

Specs:
CPU: AMD Dual-Core E-350, 1.6 GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6310M
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition
RAM: 3 GB (2.60 Usable)
Weight: 3.4 lb
Screen Size: 11.6" - Widescreen

Games and Other Tests:
Ubuntu (Can't get dual-boot to work properly, so I won't be including Linux in my review. Sorry!)

Testing Methodology: I played 1v1, 2v2, and 4v4 on my desktop, then transferred the replays to my dm1z. From there, I used FRAPS while watching the replay to record my FPS. During the FPS recording, I made sure to enable 'Player Camera' to watch myself, in order to get realistic FPS numbers (vs just leaving the camera in one spot with no action happening).

Testing Methodology: I created a demo of my own, then benchmarked it using the settings you see below. In my demo, I made sure to get boomer puke on myself in order to test under (what I consider to be) realistic conditions, ie., boomer bile + horde of zombies.

Conclusion/Thoughts:
I've had this netbook/ultra-portable for the good part of 4 months now, and am extremely happy with my purchase. I ran into some problems at first, but after a few days of contacting HP support, and then receiving my replacement from them less than one week later, I got them ALL squared away. If you'd like to find out more about the problems I had with my dm1z, look at post #2 under "For archival purposes" for more information.

In terms of performance, the benchmark results really speak for themselves. This last spring quarter, my laptop was used for note-taking, PowerPoint/Prezi presentations, web surfing, the occasional movie, and even StarCraft II gaming once or twice. It has a good balance between screen size and weight, which was my main concern, and coming from my old 15.4" 6.2 lbs Toshiba Satellite to this, I must say I can feel the difference on my back. You can take my word for it when I say that I will not hesitate to admit when I have buyer's remorse; for $420 - $30 coupon (SAVE30HP) this is not one of those times!

I'd also like to note that, no matter how horrible of a reputation people claim that HP has, they cannot deny that HP's customer support service is excellent. I never had to wait longer than 12 business hours to receive a reply from them.

Side note: I've read reviews about other ultra-portables similar to the dm1z (i.e., the ones with Zacate), and I have a few comments regarding those reviews. While I do agree that some brands, for example Lenovo, carry a high reputation for build quality when compared to HP, I can confidently say that my dm1z is no slouch when it comes to build quality. Having said this, I would HIGHLY recommend that you get whichever is cheaper, as they are all really just the same! Same hardware, same screen size, similar weight. In my case, I chose to sway away from the crowd and give HP a chance. And, much to my surprise, I got a free external Blu-Ray drive out of it!

Questions/Comments/Requests?:
I hope you like my review! If you have any questions or comments for my review, or if you want pictures or benchmarks run, please don't hesitate to post here or PM me.

For archival purposes Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Update 3: I've received my new dm1z from HP. For those who are curious, this new model is called "dm1-3005xx". I'm going to play with it more tonight! I don't know yes whether it's any different than my original dm1z, but I received an external Blu-Ray drive FOR FREE! GO HP!

Update 2: I just got a call from an HP rep who told me that he'll be shipping me a brand new unit, and that I should send my old unit once I've received it! HP has apparently received quite a few complaints like mine, and they want to take the old units back to research the problem a little further.

The best part is what I'm getting out of this: They'll be shipping a brand new unit that actually has a back-lit keyboard, and the keys themselves will be lowered so that I don't have the same problem as before. Again, this just goes to show that HP knows about this problem. AND, since the dm1z doesn't come with a CD/DVD drive, they're going to ship a DVD reader (not writer frown.gif) that plays bluerays!

HP ROCKS!

Update 1: My review will be put on hold for some time due to a problem I've found with the design of the my dm1z. I'll be sending it in for an RMA in hopes that HP can do something about the problem, or at least provide me with a work around (such as a protector I can place between the keyboard and monitor.

The Problem:
The bezel around the monitor is placed in such a way that, when the laptop is closed, the outer keys are constantly touching it (the bezel). Over time, this has left permanent scratches on the bezel, as well as chalky residue on the keys that line up perfectly to the bezel. I can have pictures up if anyone would like to see this.

After lots of Googling, I've only found two other users that have the same problem as me, and I hope that this problem has been fixed, as I absolutely LOVE my dm1z so far.

I've contacted HP support, and they've offered to pay for any shipping/handling fees required to send my dm1z in. At this point, I'm just trying to figure out when I won't need it for school so that I can send it in.

Stay tuned!

Hope you're enjoying your new netbook.

I was surprised to receive mine on the 16th! it was originally supposed to ship out on the 18th but the package left the factory from China on the 14th and got here in only two days!

I finally got the chance to fire up Left 4 Dead and to my surprise the performance was a lot better than I expected.

So far, it's better than I expected. The only thing that I have a gripe with is that there's no Home key!!! Oh well. I can live without.
