Best DSLR camera for a noob? (just takes pictures, no video)

Hey, I have wanted to get into photography but never got around to doing it because of some money issues. Now its resolved and I want to start (my camera phone is atrocious at taking pictures )

I'm a strong believer in the UNIX philosophy in the aspect of an object doing one thing and doing it well. What would be a good camera that just takes pictures and nothing more for me to start out with? If you can try to keep the price low though. Don't want to get into those money issues again

Budget? You can expect to pay $500 minimum for a new entry-level DSLR kit (unless you want to buy used).

Nikon D3000/D3100, Canon T1i/T2i, Pentax K-x/K-r, Sony SLT A33 are all decent entry-level DSLRs.

Then you're looking at the Nikon D40 and Canon Rebel XS and their earlier models (Nikon D40, Canon Rebel XTi, etc.)

300-400 is a pretty low budget.....

you can try olympus e520, pentax k-x or sony a500/550 bodies. i think the pentax or the sony will be the best for the price.

Micro 4/3rds is the way to go. Good lenses, great formfactor, and low prices. You can easily get a g1 kit for around $400 and the kit lens is pretty good.

I've been reading a bit and I've come across one post on this forum stating that some cameras don't have an autofocus motor or something like that. I'll like to the post when I find it. Which cameras should I avoid then?
