And which iPad are you trading for the Rebel XS? You can usually find a refurbished kit for $400.

The Rebel XS is a nice camera, but if you can sell your iPad outright for enough money, you should consider this.
Its the 1st gen wifi 16gb one. Most I could get out of it is around 300-350 The one offered to me comes with 2 lens though.

I would go with m43 cameras from panasonic and olympus (might be biased coz I have one) but when you compare the size of m43 cameras to even a smallest DSLR you would be surprised how small these things are (GF1/GF1/EPL Series) I have Pana G1 and it takes amazing pictures...large sensor (a bit smaller than regular DSLR/wouldn't notice a difference in quality of pictures anyways)), dedicated controls and its cheap Give it a look

Which lenses? With DSLRs, lenses matter a lot. Two cheapo lenses won't do you much good.

I'm going to assume you mean an 18-55, since Canon doesn't make a 15-55 and the 15-85mm (the only other one with a focal range similar to that) is much more expensive than the rest of the kit.

Assuming everything is in good condition, it sounds like a very nice trade for an iPad.
