Friend looking for laptop for college

My friend is looking for a laptop for college, it should have a decent battery life, be usable for web surfing, video playback, word documents, and possibly light gaming. No real price limit but no need to spend a fortune, looking at a quad core sandy bridge in the ~15" range. I was looking at the HP Dv6 line as they seem to have been revamped with decent ascetics and quality but I am unsure given Hp's rough history.

edit: No apple products.

You don't really need to spend the money on a Sandy Bridge chip if you will just be doing video playback. Light gaming is fine if you mean Bejeweled and Poker. If you want to play any kind of new game at low-medium settings, you'll need a laptop with a discrete video card.

Ya I know the sandy bridge chip will most likely not be needed but it is available, is better and honestly isn't more money in most cases than the first gen i5/i7 chips. I am looking at the hp dv6/7t quad edition laptops, however I am concerned about hp's quality of products. Can any1 possibly owning one of the new laptops describe how well built it is or if it seems like it will last a decent amount of time.

As far as manufacturers are concerned, I've always had really good experience with gateways. I get a lot of flak for it sometimes, but I've had countless problems with toshiba, the aforementioned HP, (dear HEAVENS dell) and the like.

Also, in my opinion a quad-core for a light user is a bit of overkill. My laptop is an i3 and a quick dual-core is not a wimpy machine to say the least. I absolutely adore it, although I would recommend getting discrete graphics, if it doesn't boost the price too much.
