I say do it, though I'm no Intel expert. Not even sure if this is possible. Be careful of laws though, before you buy check if this really is an ES by looking on the chip first at the markings/words. If it is, you could get apprehended as it is illegal.

Here's the problem...if that 1.188 is VTT Core...what is the vcore? It may be something in the 1.55+ range...

go for it.

As a clarification, it's illegal for the person who received the ES originally to sell it, as they signed something saying they wouldn't.

For the third party they sold it to, it's not illegal for them to resell it afterwords. That's why these things can show up on ebay. Basically you need to have signed something saying you wouldn't sell it for it to be illegal.

like that!

also the 1.188v was most likley a older version of cpu-z showing the wrong voltage. older versions showed the VTT core and not the Vcore! if he could set bios to 1.1v and boot a 5ghz that chip would be worth much more than $300

Well, frankly, ES chips are property of Intel always. It was on loan from Intel, and you're still dealing with stolen goods. Like buying anything which the previous seller didn't own, you'll undoubtedly (although unlikely) loose the item in question if you're caught, but the legal actions taken against you may be at prosecutors' discretion.

Thread Starter
ok, i just came back and looked at it again.... on the chip it says: "intel confidential... i7" and the date 10' and the bios identifies it as "Genuine Intel (r) cpu... also on cpuz it's exactly the same....

I asked to check it on a different motherboard, and we opened up a brand new ud7 and same thing.... 1.188v with 5.1ghz

The only thing i didn't notice before was at cpu-z and the bios it has the stock speed at 3.10ghz

It says :
"Genuine Intel (R) CPU 0 @3.10Ghz (ES)" word for word. So is this even sandybridge?
code name in cpu-z is sandybridge but i think that could be tinkered with

i thought the 2600k was at 3.4 stock.... I told him to hold it for me til tomorrow....

what do you guys think

if it's illegal then forget about it.... just interesting thats all

I was looking for 2600ks just to look since i had already bought mine... and the guy that owned the store showed me one that was for sale and he put it in a test bench to show me it's performance... He said it was an engineering sample confused.gif

I don't know what that means exactly but... the thing did 5.1ghz with 51 multi 100 base clock and at 1.188v!!
Prime95 stable

Now comming from amd where i needed 1.5v to get 4ghz, this seems amazing to me! He offered to sell it to me for 389 dollars... Should i do it? It has no warranty or anything... OEM

meh...something sounds fishy to me.....You should be very cautious.

As reported before, he may be using a version of CPU-Z that's reporting the wrong voltages. Before you buy, ask him to redo the OC and look at it with CPU-Z. Then, shut off the computer and look at the BIOS settings and double-check to make sure the voltage is correct. If it is, then you've got an ES CPU with some beastly capabilities.

ES processors are given to people under Non-Disclosure Agreements so either he received it from Intel and is violating his NDA, or (and this is more likely) he got it off someone as these CPUs, though rare, do travel around.

I'd probably buy it and then sell your current one of I were you. The probability of you getting caught is minimal (it's not like Intel actively searches for ES CPUs in the hands of random people). I've never heard of anyone owning an ES processor having it taken away by Intel.
Please don't do sue the poor guy like some people are telling you, if the voltage is legit, he's probably just trying to make an extra buck off an ES CPU he got, no need to go flaming.

Cheers!

buy it... sample or not i think having a chip like this to be a plus... i own one... I also think they perform better than the mass produced chips you can by at stores...

Intel and AMD do a better job of producing these kinds of chips than they do when they ramp up production... thats a fact that i would love to debate but as most people havent gotten their hands on a Eng-sample info is scarce.
