A GPU is NEVER overkill. It will last you longer, and you'll be able to max out the new games coming later this year like BF3.

Go for a GTX580.

My GTX570 gives me an average of 50Fps on Crysis warhead at enthusiast settings with 4x AA... so i would think a 580 would be beneficial to your predicament.

I could max out the games I played on a single 460 at 1080p. BFBC2 ran just fine maxed with x4 AA, x8 AF. Stalker COP also ran fine.
I'm sorry, but I don't believe that for a SECOND. I had a gtx480 and I still couldn't max out BFBC2 @ a constant 60fps @ 1080p.

Not overkill.

I have GTX 480, I can clock it to 900Mhz which should be faster than a GTX 580 and I barely manage to run some games at 1680, but I use all the AA I can. When I say barely I mean without noticing frame skipping. The bottom line is that if you use lots of AA and sometimes for some games 8XAA might be lots, then your performance does suffer a lot.

I totally agree. I'd go for 6850 and 6870 crossfire. They have great scaling + good power consumption. Check the 6850/6870 crossfire reviews. If you don't trust reviews and some people really don't or confused like me but at least checking on most sites will help. I saw the 6850 crossfire review and I was amazed how it handle Crysis. Also take note the 6850's are great card and it uses only one 6-pin connector. Since you are using a 6870 its better to add another card. Why spend more. If you can jump to a 580 then why not go for a 6950 that can be unlocked then sell your 6870 then wait till you save up and get another 6950. That is just my opinion. I know maybe I'm dragging it so far. Think of price/performance ratio. I'm not saying a 580 is a weak card although there are dual cards can outperform it and consumes lesser power.

Here is the review of the 6850 in crossfire. I know you are using a 6870 but at least lower cards can impress you somehow.

An even more sensible upgrade would be a single 560, or perhaps 2 560's for the same cost as a 580 but better performance than one. In fact, I usually only use one of my 560 cards and simply turn SLI on for when I ever need a little extra boost for really tough games like Metro and Crysis. But if you don't wanna worry about 2 cards and have the money, I say go for the 580. I always shoot for overkill because so I don't ever have to worry about my frames dipping on heavy scenes.

Also, the people claiming to be running heavy games maxed out on lower cards need to stop giving people false information. You either don't actually have the game maxed out or you don't care that your game is running at 15 fps.

GTX580 @ 1680x1050 will max anything out.

Now, 1920x1080 is basically the same res as 1680x1050.
580 should max it out alright. My 460 sli overclocked beats a 5970 and 470sli so yes I'm in a position to speak. When I played on 1680 there was only metro that took down my cards. At 1920 I get 54fps on Crysis sans AA 32bit. Buy apply 2 times AA and add a driving scene with enemies and heavy fighting and I easily dip to 30-35 fps causing mega amounts of lag. Besides metro you should be able to max everything. Metro with DOF off yeah it's possible... Still difficult.
