So I began OCing my i7 930 after purchasing it over a year ago. I have a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R, and 6GB Corsair Dominator PC3-12800 1600MHz (Rated speed, 7-7-7-20@1.65v).

Currently standing at 4.2ghz and pretty stable (3 hours OCCT, 1.5 hours IBT, 1 hour Lynx, 5 passes memtest, no issues).

I was at 1.3v for the 4.2ghz OC (any lower vcore caused errors in occt before even 1h), but I was only testing my OCs for 1h in occt. I noticed today that 1.3v failed a 3h occt twice in a row, so I bumped the voltage just a tad (to ~1.306) and it's fine for 3h now, probably more but I stopped it early. All of my games and programs were tested extensively at 1.3v but I figured I'd go with 1.306 just for worst case scenario.

Temps vary a lot since my ambient temps vary a lot. When ambient is low, I don't go above 60C or so at max load, high ambient temps yield about 74/75C. Idle temps vary from 36C average to 40C average.

From what I can see, I can probably take the vcore down a good deal by either lowering the multi to x20, or dropping the Bclk to 191, bringing the cpu to 4.01ghz. At that point, I'd be sacrificing a bit of mem clock, but 1528 is probably not noticeably slower than 1600. Although underclocking the ram bothers me a bit unless I can run it at 1T, but I cant boot at 1T at 1528mhz and 1.64v.

In conclusion, is 4.2ghz@1.306v and temps between 60C and 74C okay for 24/7 use? Or should I shoot for a 4ghz OC at a lower vcore (I'd estimate I can get it stable at around 1.25-1.275c). Also, any suggestions on how to improve the current OC, and possibly drive the vcore down?

That's a great OC and a good temp for 24/7 use - I wouldn't worry about it, you would never hit 100% load in any everyday applications anyway.

True. It's my spring break so I don't want to waste all of it tinkering around, and to be honest I'm happy with the temps.

By the way, my cooling solution is a Venemous-X with two scythe gentle typhoons in push/pull in an Antec 1200.

Of course, I could probably drop it to 4.0ghz and 191 bclk and start the whole process of finding a good voltage all over again, but as long as the .05v or so isn't a big deal (especially considering the temps aren't all THAT much different from what I can see), I think I'll leave it as is.

Also, is 3h OCCT, 1.5h IBT, and 5 passes memtest sufficient for stability? Ive heard of people running for 20 hours or more but I'm not too keen on running it at max load for that long. Like I said, all my programs and games were stable at 1.3v, and 1.306 was just for peace of mind, I couldn't imagine anything more being necessary on the stability side.

I'll probably keep this comp for at least two or three more years though, is the 1.306v going to be a problem in terms of lifetime?

Also, should I turn off SMART fan and just run the cpu fans at 100% all the time?

This is OCN where we want the fastest and best performance from our PC. I run mine at 4.5ghz sure it's unstable and I BSOD a lot but it's the best performance and I simply cannot live with 4.4ghz.
