2 Day old Comp System Freezes? - Page 3

Ok, hold on a moment.
Why are you using asus smartdoctor?
You have a gigabyte UD4 board, right?

Alright, let's get to the bottom of this.
Download prime95 (32 or 64 bit depending on XP or windows 7) and run a BLEND test. Run it for about 30 minutes. Then run a small FFT test.
Do you get any errors?

Also, go download "microsoft debugging tools for windows" and get the correct symbol package for your OS. Getting the symbols to be recognized when you open a crash dump may be tricky. I forget if you can just set the symbol path online as *Sym or *srv or if its srv* or sym* (I forgot). But you can install the symbols then point it to that directory instead. Then see if you have a crash dump in c:\\windows\\minidump and use !analyze -V after you open it.

Even if you don't get a BSOD, you MIGHT STILL get a unseen dump of one. I've actually seen a crash dump happen without the BSOD even appearing...the computer just froze hard.

Post back with results.

BTW, when the keyboard and mouse "turn off" like that, it MEANS that you bsod. When I get a "BSOD", my computer just freezes, and then reboots about 15 seconds later. No idea why, especially when I have automatically restart disabled :/

You can also try removing the CPU, check for any bent pins or burn marks, then reseat the CPU. Also try setting the Vdimm to 1.60v (DDR voltage) just in case...

Any suggestions now haha? im not amazing at computers but that memtest looks kind of confusing to get working. Do i burn the program to a disc, and then go into boot settings when the computer starts up and get it to boot from disc? or something like that?

Cheers bud
Aww crap! Ok, time to get serious. Use a burning software like Burn Aware Free (here's the link http://www.burnaware.com/ ) to burn the ISO you downloaded for Memtest to a disc. Restart and boot up off that CD/DVD. Have it run all tests (which can take a while. Go watch a movie or go out to dinner... twice! lol) and if it reports ANY errors at all, then the RAM is not good.

Another couple of tests to run (No downloading necessary and the two together should take less than an hour) click start and type CMD. On the icon that appears, right click and Run As Administrator. Now, type "chkdsk /f" without the quotes. After that completes, type "sfc /scannow" (again without quotes) and press enter. If either of those reports any errors, post them here (screen shot with ALT + Print Screen button) or copy and paste will do. These tests will verify the integrity of your hard drive, and the overall health of the Windows installation. Once done here, put the Memtest CD you burned into your CD/DVD drive and restart. Make sure CD/DVD is the first boot option in BIOS.

BTW This video should help you out some.

Okay So i ran both Prime95 Tests suggested Small FFT's and Blend, Both for 1 hour each. In each of the little boxes (workers) no errors occured at all.

I then ran the Disk Check and system check in CMD and no errors or corruption showed up either, apparently all healthy.

As far as trying to take out the CPU to check for broken or bent wires i would rather not. The system is less than 2 days old and the heatsink is absolutely Massive i would rather not fiddle with it. If thats the issue ill probably send it back to them and let them deal with it.

In saying that - I've only had 2 freezes for the day since starting this thread at about 10am this morning - its now 4pm so 2 freezes in 6 hours i guess is a little better, but for a brand new system and for the $$$ ive paid it really shouldn't be happening at all.

Ill try the Memtest now and get back to you guys. although the Prime95 test i did said it was pretty RAM intensive so does that give a small indication that RAM may be all good?

Is it safe to increase the ram voltage to 1.6v?? i feel a bit uneasy with changing things in the BIOS especially if changing voltages somehow messes something else up?

Anyway thanks heaps for your support guys and hopefully we can work this one out ><

Regards,

Ben

Ok, one thing jumped out at me. Your memory is set to 1.5v in bios, I would think that it should be changed to 1.65. It can't hurt to try at least.

Also, while you are testing things, unplug every non essential peripheral from your computer. I have seen usb devices make a computer unstable before. Just keep it to keyboard, mouse, monitor, and analogue speakers/headset while you sort your issues out.

Edit: About the ram voltage, yes, it's quite safe. 1.65 will be no problem what so ever, no worries.

Have you tried re-seating the HSF?
Sound a little like overheating to me.

Okay well the specs for the ram does say 1.5v and on the label on the side of the RAM itself but ill give it ago - i guess it cant hurt. At the moment tho i only have mouse/keyboard/monitor/headphones/ and my USB internet device

Also as a bit of added info - the Keyboard itself does have 2 USB connectors which need to be plugged in and a headphone and audio jack - Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Elite - would it work if i just had 1 of the USB heads connected instead of all 4?

Cheers guys
