Build Suggestions?

Thread Starter
I was asked to build a computer for one of my lab guys the other day and I told him I would check and see what I could do for him. The budget I am aiming for is under $700.00. and I am not making anything off of this, its just helping someone out kind of deal. He is an older gentlemen and he and his wife will mainly be playing simple games like tetris, bejewled and general stuff like that. I told him, he could just go buy a Prebuilt Dell or something, but he is one of those that likes his toys. What can I say, he saw my computer and wants a cool toy I guess. Anyway the problem I have had is, I haven't been able to cruise the net lately on whats been coming out and whats what as far as best bang for buck deal. I want to be able to upgrade parts over the years, so that he can get some good use out of this setup. He had his last PC for 12 years, so if this new one lasts that long again or if he even lasts that long he will be more than happy.

As far as cases go, lets stick to Mid-tower cases.
Don't need a Monitor at the moment either.
Suggest Keyboards and Mice as long as it keeps system under $700.

If possilbe I would really like to build this budget PC under $500 and have it be reasonablly expandable/upgradable down the line.

So what do you recommend as far as building an INTEL PC for under $700. Please include links to your suggested parts. Thanks in advance and I appreaciate the help.

If you want longevity I wouldn't go with Intel. Intel seems to change their socket standard nearly every time a new chip lineup comes out now, so upgrading your CPU in the future would be a bit of a problem.

It should be cake to make a $500 AMD build that isn't a heavy gamer. I'd say go with the AM3 socket and pick your favorites. I have a 1366 board (which ROCKS) but is already aging what with the new sandy bridge glory that's come out now.
