I have been mucking around in it for a few hours now, getting used to using commands and such. Now I want to make it look good.

i know that a lot of people use compiz and emerald, could you post your themes that you use? also, whats the best dock package?

not another mac cloning convert!

fail...

you should really try to go for something unique rather than just copying everyone else, the desktops you see that make you just go "wow" are the ones that dont look like hundreds of other ubuntu users who want a mac clone... its the ones that are unique

gnome is fairly customizable so you should be able to do something cool
Kinda meh now...

Lol have you seen the default look of latest Ubuntu releases? The default is a mac OS X lookalike.

1.Nobody uses emerald (trust me you don't either).

2. Ubuntu already runs compiz from the start, just type ccsm in the terminal to configure it (if you have to, install the ccsm package if you don't have it)

3. I don't use application docks. However, there are two application docks that you would like, here's my opinion:
cairo-dock is my favorite, because it's the most featureful and can be made to look like OS X or any flavor you want... you get to decide.
awn (avant window navigator) is a little less configurable, less featurefull but still looks nice. This is used a lot more, even though personally I don't like it.

4. I use shiki-colors gtk+ theme with the gnome-colors icon set with the shiki-flat window decoration... you choose the color which is what I like. I say it looks really nice, although it appears a little dark.

I don't run Ubuntu, but almost all Linux distributions share this in common. Good luck on your Linux adventure!

LOL. I have to agree with Ent on this one. What is with the Apple circle jerking going around? Personally I think Gnome is the wrong place to start for "eye candy". If you're really wanting to find the best looking thing then you'll have to try out all the DEs and WMs. I really think KDE is the easiest to make look good. But you should look into E17(Enlightenment). Or you may find the simplistic feeling of Xfce and Lxde are more your thing. Just don't settle for the dock and OSX clone stuff because everyone else does. Linux gives you freedom. Exercise it.

PS: Check out "Show your Linux" the thread is filled with cool things to look at.

GNU/Linux is so versatile you can make it look like anything... just note that somethings you make it look like will be frowned upon by others because they don't like it...

Lighten up *nix users... remember you are unique, like everyone else...

If you like the way the Mac OS looks but want a better OS then make your Linux install look like one... why not?!

(I wouldn't, but that is my choice!)
