In the meantime throw on a NYKO intercooler - but if you can't find this, any cheap USB - 4 fan $8 cooler will keep it around 5 degrees cooler

I will try to turn it off for about 10 minutes, let a powerful fan blow into the intake. Then fire up the game to see if there is a delay before I get artifacts.

EDIT: Just tried that method, and everything points to heat.

I fired it up, and played a good 30 seconds before getting an artifact, Before it was instant.
My basement is a much cooler environment then my living room.

Maybe I should take it apart..

It could be very much related to heat. When I got my 4870x2 it was summer. And I started getting artifacts in the first few days. They disappeared though when I turned the fan up to 70% or higher (but now my card sounded like a jet engine)

Also, just look up to make sure you PS3 model is the one with the 19 blade fan - sony introduced the 15 blade fan - but these were very ineffective

How do I find out that information? I will begin disassembly in about 15 minutes.
Before I do that, is there a model number on the board that can help you guys?

There should be a model number on a sticker behind the ps3 - along with a manufacturer date.

yeah if you can put a little fan in there with it open and it does not do it anymore then it defiantly is overheating. And worst you can do is opening it is not fixing the problem, so you will only be without a stable ps3 sadly.

After I do a complete cleaning and that happens to solve the problem, what can I do to prevent this from happening again...without liquid cooling the ps3 that is lol.

@justin

Thanks for the info, but i dont get yellow LED and my artifacts are not that bad from what i've seen above. This is how it went: Running perfect>update 3.56>wouldn't boot>sat for a month>update 3.60 + different tv + format>semi works (now)

OK - you have the CECHE01 - same model as me - check out my YLOD fixing thread

So this model comes with dual lasers (one for Blue-ray and one for DVD)... It should also come with the APS 240 psu, along with the 19 blade fan.

Probably best thing to do is open it up and check that everything on the motherboard looks fine (no fallen off bits), and there are no burn marks. Also check that the CPU/GPU look alright.

If everything looks good, move onto phase no.2. You do not need a reflow with reflux atm. But we still need to do something about the heat issues. So, you will need to change the stock Thermal Paste - to something better (the stock TIM is absolute crap).

Also, you can bend the clamps slightly (holding the fan in position) - to get the HSF tighter contact with the chips
post #20 of 39

shows the bending of the clamps ^^
