RAM usage is not that important.... most systems ship with 2GB+ and most games are 32-bit applications.

...and no, if games ran at low level coding, most would not run due to the various possible hardware configurations.

And PCs don't have "ten times the horsepower." Its not running games at 10x the resolution or 10x the frame rate and how many people have a GTX 580 or a 6970? According to Steam hardware polls, they are of the absolute minority so it hardly means that we will see some amazing new breakthrough if every developer switched from a high-level programming language to a low-level one. You still have to develop games for the most common denominator and I wager that most gamers still have 8800GTs, 4870s, etc. which, if you look at the specifications, are no were close to having 10x the shaders or bandwidth of consoles.

Furthermore, the reason Direct3D is so popular is because you don't have to program at near-machine-code or low level to get great results. Developers could bypass the API but why spend millions doing so when an API is already made...



In my opinion, Innovation has always started on consoles rather than PC and this just solidifies my feelings even more:

Assuming that we all had Windows 7.

Wouldn't hardware be a second big thing slowing down progress ?
I imagine most XP users own a DX9 GPU. Altho I'm not sure if a game with native DX 11 would be unplayable on a DX9 GPU, opposed to the OS limitation XP has. Software vs Hardware limitation hmmmm, can anyone clarify ?

Windows Xp is not used just for gaming you know....

When Windows xp was released my parents were still using microsoft office in windows 3.1

Besides Windows 7 is suited for newer hardware. No use having a directx 9 card running directx 11 games. It slows down performance. Most pc users have old hardware suited mostly for office and web use

Any one of you that is arguing for bare metal coding clearly does not remember when we actually had bare metal coding. The good ol' days when you had to scan the list of 20 cards on the box to make sure yours would work. That is, if you define "make sure yours would work" as "have a reasonable shot at the game working, since it's not just the video card that's in the PC".

Oh, and why let video cards have all the fun? Sound APIs get in the way too, maybe we should program to the metal there too? Yes, I do so miss figuring out what the heck I was supposed to enter for IRQs and DMA prompts. How about we all go back to tweaking autoexec.bat and config.sys while we're at it? I'll bet someone can be really innovative if we let them tweak himem.sys manually. Screw it, who needs a file system, let them program directly to the disk's metal too!

This complaint just seems silly to me. I do not dispute that the most creative programmers in the world could do more with bare metal programming that they can with an API. But they are not the "norm", nor would that be remotely cost effective. But we've been there, done that. It reminds me of Glenn Beck's nostolgia for how things were just "better" back in the "old days"...except that they weren't. Or they are if you only cherry pick the best memories and conveniently forget the challenging times. Bare metal programming is powerful, but has all sorts of warts of its own.
