[Toms/BT] DirectX Holding Back Game Performance - Page 6

This seems like such a false premise. Lack of advanced graphics is causing the gaming market to stagnate? We have better graphics than we ever have, and the only reasons many games look nearly the same today as they did 2/3 years ago is that we're seeing a lot of console ports and multi-platform titles.

AAA games cost more than ever to make and developers and publishers don't want to bet $100 million dollars on an untested gameplay idea. So, they look at what has sold well in the past, and they say "do a game like that".

I think eventually hardware will advance to the point where its easy to render compelling scenes and gameplay, and that development tools will make it easier to produce games too. That, coupled with cheaper, free to play and mobile games means we'll start seeing more variety in our games over the next 10 years.

I think it's because we have such advanced graphics - and that advanced graphics is what developers think everyone buys games based on - that we have such crap games being pushed out. The focus is on what it looks like, not how it plays.

Seriosuly, this is on par with people claiming that their console is arbitrarily better than the other console. Every system has crappy games, you deal with it.

Just my two cents
You are misunderstading the argument. No one is arguing that PC games should be superior just because it's a PC. The point is that PCs have a bunch of advanced hardware created orimarily for gaming that is going wildly underutilized because developers are targeting five year old console technologies first. And no need to be abstract about this: I'm talking about those monster video cards that serve almost no real-world purpose whatsoever except for 3D gaming, which cost more than current-gen consoles do, but which have features going unused or underused.

So the argument is that developers should target the PC platform first, making their code and art assets native to the best technology available; and then port the result to the different consoles to the degree that each console can handle (i.e. "dumb it down"). This is how it used to work most of the time for multiplatform games, and PC gamers like it that way.

The trouble is that this costs developers a lot more. They are able to maximize profit by, to the degree possible, minimizing the platform specific coding (i.e. the port process); thus the tendency to develop for the "lowest common denominator", since they know that any and all platforms can handle what the weakest platform can handle. Additionally, as I mentioned earlier, console gaming is where the money is. So there is actually a strong disincentive to developers to make the console version "inferior" to the PC version; they want their largest market (console gamers) to believe they are getting the best version of the game that is available.

That's it in a nutshell, folks. This isn't about religous platform dogma at all to the developers, it's about money.

Why is it that some console gamers feel that their version should be equal to PCs?
Or that PC Gamers should be penalized for having better hardware, by having games ported onto PCs from consoles, or being poorly optimized, for not belonging to the cult of the "C0ns0le P34s4nts". Seriously, this is on par with people not wanting other people to have things because they can't have them. (Edit: Being on a computer enthusiast forum a better way to say this is people not wanting other people to have thing because they don't want those things themselves) Every system has crappy games, you FIGHT this by not buying those crappy games and VOICING your opinion to developers and tell THEM to deal with it.

DirectX 9 isn't holding Crytek back. Thats all we really need. A developer to take something that people claim can't be done, or is too time consuming/costly to be profitable, then do it, show them they are wrong, and all of a sudden the Dev/Publisher whining disappears.

The problem is, very few companies in our hobby actually set the BAR, and everyone else is content just reaching (some cases... just looking at) the bar, and just by the time they caught it, they start trying to keep it there as long as possible (human nature) because its easier and cheaper, but then companies like Valve, Blizzard, and Crytek, push the envelope further in their respective genres.

Keep up, or forever be left behind. In PC gaming, being the most technically advanced game engine is one of main selling/marketing points. For a console their sales point is compatibility and optimization. They don't have to be mutually exclusive, however, the most technically advanced engines won't ever be on a console first. That is our exclusivity, thats why we pay the big bucks. So we can have the brightest, shiniest, impressive graphics there are, and usually first. When we see something being "ported" to us, we primarily think we aren't going to get the most technical gaming engine, we are getting something compatible and optimized. Maybe even low end now due to our performance curve in comparison to consoles. This is not some elitist "entitlement" issue, this is from our countless experience in the past of shoddy jobs, and the fact that we have tech specs that consoles simply do not have. The ports that do not suck, and get care and love for the PC, stand out with us and will be kept favorites no different then our PC only children.

as for crysis 2, getting my preorder limited edition tomorrow. we'll see.
I'm highly skeptical about no DX9 support, considering how much money they would lose (all Windows XP users), and considering the 360 they'll be developing it for as well, uses DX9.

Dice already announced no DX9 support.

Time to move foward.... even IE9 does not support XP.
