ooooh, i haven't tested the program in W8

just to be sure, at that directory, is there a '\steamapps\common\' and '\steam\games\' folder? Steam might install differently on W8.

How hard is it to take all of the steam stuff and put it in a 7z or rar archive and put it on another hard drive while you reformat? Honestly. I've done it before, and the only thing you have to do is re-install steam, then it recognizes games perfectly.

How ... How did you guess I was on Windows 8 Pro x64 RTM Activated from Microsoft ? Well, I am and yeah it works now had no games yet was testing it only ... Since am on a 1mbps connection with a 5g/month quota (Lame I know) and games being > 8gb am at a loss ...

But just for curiosity, will backed up games n such with your tool work on another PC without having to re-download them ?

Thanks wink.gif

Of course that's one way to do it, but using this program will backup at least twice as fast on quad cores and scales up to octo cores. The reason for this is because using 7za , using its highest compression level, can only utilize 2 cores. This program can run up to 4 instances of 7za.

We are talking about saving at least 12-14 hours backup time for ~500GB worth of games.

Also have you tried opening a 7za file that is > than 100GB? It takes for ever to open if you just want to restore a single game.

I could tell by the square shaped buttons in your picture biggrin.gif.

I made this tool for transferring game files between computers smile.gif.

So before you have any games I guess at least one of those folders are not created until you download a game...

Thanks for the clarification. It's always pissed me off that even recently made programs still use 1 or 2 cores.

Its a limitation of the compression algorithm (LZMA) itself. There is LZMA2 which can use up to 8 cores but it uses twice the amount of ram per thread in my tests (8 threads uses 4.3GB of ram) and it doesn't compress any better other than files that are already compressed and in some cases it is worse.

A lot of people complain about how optimized programs are for multi core PCs without realising that sometimes it is not possible or has diminishing returns.

once the restore is done, in steam, right click each game that you have restored and click install. it will look like it is downloading the game again but if you look carefully it is 'downloading' way to fast. basicly it checks what files are needed and downloads them.

a more thorough but slow way is the following:
Right click game > Properties > Local Files Tab > Verify integrity of the game Cache
this will do that same as just installing the game but if any files became corrupted it will re download that file.
