Athlon ll 4X 640 First-time Overclock

Thread Starter
This is my first post here so a big hello to you all.
It's also my first time at overclocking so bare with me please.

System specs:
AMD Athlon ll X640 3.0ghz
AMD Stock Cooler
Asus M4A78LT-M LE
Mushkin Silverline 2x2gb 1333mhz, 9-9-9-24
Corsair CX430 PSU
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

This is where I'm at so far:
http://www.overclock.net/attachment....1&d=1300544715

BIOS Settings changed:
Bus speed @ 230/3450mhz
CPU/NB frequency @ 10x
CPU overvoltage @ 1.325v (rises to a max 1.392 under load - CPUZ)
VDDNB overvoltage @ 1.2v
LLC @ 0%
HT Link Speed @ 1800
HT Link Width @16bit
HT overvoltage @ 1.2v
Memory Clock Mode @ 533mhz
DRAM Timing Mode @ Auto
Memory voltage @ 1.5v

Cool & Quiet disabled
Adv. Clock Calibration set to ALL CORES
Unleashing mode Enabled.
Q-Fan Enabled.

This is on the stock AMD cooler (have a Xigmatek S963 coming next week).
Temps after 20 minutes of Prime95 are 41-43 with a high of 45.
Idle is between 15-18
So far so good, everything is stable and error free but need to run a longer stress test.

As I said, this is my first time so how do these figures look to you guys and is there anything that can be changed thus far to improve things?

MrSingha.

I would try to lower the core voltage down a bit.
Keep your HT Link speed as close to 2000 as possible.

Looks like a nice first overclock to me if it's stable.

Is there any way to stop the voltage fluctuations when under load and lock it to whats set in the BIOS (1.325)?
As and when I push it higher I may need to drop HT Link down to 1600 from 1800 at present but I'll keep my eye on it. I'll probably leave it as is for now until I get my new cooler and see what the new temps are like.
Thanks a lot.

The 1333 CL9 generic RAM is going to hold you back. The Silverline is also probably thw worst overclocker if you compared all the generic RAM side by side. In addition, x4 640 doesn't OC that well in some cases; my friend hits a wall at 3.5 with this chip. Don't expect to be able to OC far. You'll be lucky to get 3.6Ghz.

Yeah that's pretty much what I thought. I know the RAM's not top quality and from what I've read 3.6 seems to be average for this chip. That's actually my target and if I can hit it Ill be more than happy considering its my first attempt at overclocking and with a very budget system.
I've ran Prime95 error-free for an hour although I did get a BSOD with 3Dmark06 first time round. Re-ran it twice (one time with an overclocked GPU) and both were fine. Temps peaked at 50*c whilst running Prime but ambient temps had risen since earlier in the day. I'm sure that will drop once I've fitted my new cooler.

So what about the voltage fluctuations guys?
1.325 set in BIOS rising to a high of 1.392 under load.
Is that normal or does it need addressing?

The best option would be to set the bus clock to 250 right away, and lower multipliers to keep things at or below stock. You can use the 5.33x multiplier to get 1333Mhz RAM at 250Mhz bus clock. Up the multipliers of the CPU and NB (leaving HT at ~2000Mhz) now to overclock (one at a time of course), and test progressively with IntelBurnTest or P95 (though I'd leave Prime95 for the end as it takes much longer). Use as much voltage as you need only; if you find instability, bump the voltage one notch up. You may wish to push a bit further than this, begin raising the bus clock again (keeping other multis down to the point where you OC'ed) until you find a point where the RAM can't be stabilized anymore. Then raise the multis again to OC the CPU more again.

Are your temps adjusted or are they the stock readings from core temp?
