CPU cooler help

Thread Starter
Hey guys I've got a i7 950 and a EVGA X58 SLI3 mobo.I have been thinking of getting a coolermaster v6(COOLER MASTER V6 GT RR-V6GT-22PK-R1 120mm DynaLoop CPU Cooler w/ Universal bracket & Dual Fan ) or a v8(V8 RR-UV8-XBU1-GP 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler) and to replace my stock cooler.I would like to know if the v6 or v8 would fit on my motherboard? Also is there any real difference between the v6 and v8?
Sorry if these seem like dumb questions.(I am not that computer savvy)

Both will fit, but there are better coolers there for the price. If you're on a budget, CM Hyper 212+ tops the VFM category.

Thanks for the reply you mean the COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus with the 120mm fan right? I can get it for cheaper than a v6 or v8.BTW how about the COOLER MASTER Hyper N 520 RR-920-N520-GP 92mm Sleeve CPU Cooler?

212+ is more recent and slightly better than the N520. Moreover its cheaper and easier to install.

K then I think I will go for a 212+.Thanks for your help.
BTW just to clarify do you think that the v6 would be a better buy than the 212+?

v6 cools better, period.

at idle, it will cool 1 or 2'C better than 212+, no more than that tho. at load the margin could stretch upto about 5'C (cant remember the source exactly, but i did a bit of homework on v6 when i was considering it).

but anyway, how you apply the thermal paste affects the temps a lot as well, so all the reviews you see on the internet are gonna be just rough guides, you might not get the cooler to work as well or perhaps better!

bottom line is, v6 generally cools better, in my eyes looks better as well. but its more noisy (apparently) and cost more (for sure). dunno where you're from, check out how much more the v6 costs over 212+, then you do the justice yourself

Thanx for the reply.the v6 gt will cost me at least twice as much as the 212+.But i am still considering my options.Any other coolers you can recommend to me?i notice you have a Frio.I checked the prices and I think I can get one for cheaper than the v6.

what is your budget on the cooler? would be good to know that before recommending you anything useful.

as regard to my frio, it does it's job. when i chose my cooler, i wanted something that would match my red/black theme of the whole build. im not a modder myself, so i'll have to take parts as they are sold. and the v6 and frio fit the bill both thermal and looks. after digging around on the internet, it appeared to me that the v6 is loud, so i pulled the trigger on frio. it was a simply choice really. with the frio at lowest fan speed on push/pull, my 950 idles at about 39'c, 20'c ish ambient, 5 runs on intel burnt test, maximum setting, 8 threads reaches about 55'c max. dunno how that sounds to you, i'm on stock by the way, don't think i will overclock my 950 any time soon.

i don't know how do you prioritise look, thermal and noise?

I'm thinking of spending about $100.My casing has fans with blue LEDs bt I am not that picky about a color scheme.I havent OC'd my i7 yet and have no immediate plans to do so.For me noise is important and I am looking for something which is generally quiet.

With that budget go for the NH-D14, the hyper 212+ is a great small cooler but the NH-D14 is far superior
