why does overclocking exist?

i mean, if you buy a 1090t at 3.2, most poeple can OC it to 4gz, 3.8+-, why not just sell them at that clock already? with the mobos that support it? i dont understand the need to over clock. why dont they just develope the chips/mobos already pumped up?

also, there are sandybridge people with 5.0ghz, from a 3.X chip. why not sell the chip already at 4.5 or something. and ditch the stock fan all together. to adjust in the price, because anyong whos OCing just tosses there stock fan into a box/bin/tin anyways.

I would rather pay for for a 1.ghz OC, with my cpu and my MOBO, then spend hours trying to get stable.

do you agree or dissigree?

or give us an option like

1090t 3.2 reg say its 200
1090t 3.2 BE say its 250
1090t 3.9=- PLATINIUM or something, say its 300 (doesnt come with a cooler, and requires a board with "platininum" (board is preloaded with the optimial power-phases, bios settings, and everything else.

like to me, it seems that people OCing, is holding the industry back, why dont companys just make a 5.gz processor already and sell it, and 3 months later, pump out a 5.5/6.0 ect.

cause we have been dwindling around 3.0ghz for 5 years now. yes i know the inceases in multi-core tech. but hiding the power because they are to lazy to do the OCing work for us? dont we pay for this when we purchases a CPU? where does my investment in there company go? What is AMD and intels R&D focusing on?

Much rather do it myself. OC'ing isn't hard. So I don't want to pay extra for it.

because not all chips perform the same. Some will clock higher than others and some will run stable with less voltage. Some SB chips may not be able to reach 5 Ghz so the manufacturer sells them at a respectable speed that they can guarantee that every chip will run at

plus I would rather pay less and spend a little bit of effort for free performance

You answered your own question in your question.

Due to variances in any chip-they keep it at a speed where it is gauranteed to be stable.Yes,you can increase the speed on most chips and get it stable,but it takes minute adjustments for each different chip.

but why not give the option? its more cash for them? less time for me, i value my time also. so if i take 8 hrs runing prime95 to check stability, and it works or doesnt work, i wasted a days worth of work. where with working, i could of jsut spent the money on something i know is stable.

Because the stock speed is the highest speed that the manufacturer can guarentee it to work with all the other components at stock speed. For example, I have my Q9550 @ 3.4GHz stable but it required upping my NB voltage slightly even though the Vcore is only at 1.18.

You know overclocking is considered a hobby, right? If you don't want to commit the time then don't do it. Simple as that.

It has to do with quality control.

In a nutshell, what you have are extremely sensitive products that perform in an extremely precise manner. To get a decent confidence limit on the Time To Failure for things like processors, manufacturers often must down-throttle its performance in lieu of longevity and reliability.

For example, my i7 was running at 1.22v at 2.66GHz when I got it. By tuning it myself, I got it to 3.4 GHz with 1.1v. That's 0.11v LESS than stock!

Every chip is different, and manufacturers give these products ample leg room so they know that they will perform as expected, without hangups, for a long period of time.

Basically overclocking (within certain specifications) is simply us doing the tuning FOR the manufacturer. They could do it themselves, but if you ever take an engineering systems overhead course, you start to see that monetarily speaking, it's just not profitable to push the limits. Play it safe and get a reliable product.

They do sell higher clocked chips. If you want to buy an i5-2xxx, you can spend $184.99 for a 2300, $189.99 for a 2400, $209.99 for a 2500, or $299.99 for a 2600. And guess what, as the price goes up, so does the speed the chip runs at.

The higher the speed, The hotter it gets. Stock cooler can't handle that. Overclocking can reduce the life of the CPU. So, If they sell you a 4Ghz CPU, That CPU should be more heat resistant (using stock cooler)than what we have now. So It will be very expensive.

The price of the CPU's are already high as it is. So what the chipmakers do is, "here is the CPU for 200 bucks. Buy a watercooling system and overclock it at your own risk. We won't replace it though if you fry it".

I actually enjoy the challenge of making my chip run above spec. also I don't see spending 8 hrs running prime95 a waste because it means that I find out that I'm not stable and can move on to improve stability or that I'm finally stable and that all that work paid off.
