Diagnose My HDD Problem

Thread Starter
Here's my situation, my external LaCie HDD died and I don't know if it is the PCB that is fried or if it is the head.
I don't want to spend money buying a replacement PCB if it is not the problem.
I have attached a sound clip of what it sounds like when I power up the HDD. (Turn up volume)

I already took the HDD out of the casing and conntected it to the computer via SATA cable.
No luck, any help will be appreciated.
Thanks!

EDIT: Before the HDD died, the transfer speeds significantly slowed to a crawl. Problem with the head?
EDIT2: Any recommendations on reliable external HDD?

Did you hear any strange sounds from your HDD before it died? If not, I would think it's the PCB.

A WD external will suit you just fine.

When it worked, there was a folder I could not access/open/click and it gave me an error.
The sound it would make was similar to that of the audio clip.
It would then need to be powered off then on after that.

Which WD teir/level will provide greater reliability

Bad sectors? Does the drive show up in Windows Disk Management?

The real question is, do you want to recover your data?

externals die so quick pull it out put it in your computer boot up pull the data and use it for light work if you feel confident in a few weeks give it heavier work just realize it may never work right again

Do you still have the external enclosure LaCie? Does it still work, or are you going to try to RMA the entire thing? Grabbing a 2.5'' or 3.5'' drive and putting it in there would be the cheapest solution.

Otherwise, something like this would work if you want USB 2.0, and something like this or this would work if you want to utilize USB 3.0.
