GPU or CPU upgrade?

Thread Starter
Hey guys. First time poster!

Been poring over your forums for quite some time now and I have to say that there's a plethora of info here! Great stuff! Now that I got the butt-kissing out of the way, I wanted to ask a simple question or two, hehe.

I was wondering what would be the most beneficial upgrade for my current system. I'll be using it for gaming and encoding, mostly. The current issue I have right now is the lagginess in certain games. I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means, but it would be nice to turn everything on and play something for a change. I always have to find the "middle ground" to make something playable these days. The encoding doesn't bother me much.

With my current monitor, the max resolution is 1440x900, and I love having all of the eye candy cranked up if possible. Also, I'd like to keep the simplicity of using a single card solution as well. I've had too many issues with SLi/CrossFire, and would just like to leave that all behind me for now.

My budget is around $170, so I have a few options I was looking at. I've seen a 6-core Thuban for around that price, and GTX 460's are well within that range now.

I would love to hear from anyone else that has any input. Thanks in advance!

P.S. Almost forgot. I have the CPU overclocked at 3.3 ghz (from 2.8 stock) and my 5770 is at 935/1350.

hmm tough choice but im going to say go with a new GPU maybe a 6950 that should be plenty for 1440x900. your CPU is fine for pretty much any game.

for 170 a 460 will be plenty but get the 1GB model

EDIT actually if you can go a little over 170 then you can get a 5850 which is a little faster than a 460 and can be overclocked much further

If you do encoding, you'll probably adore the parallel-processing power of four more threads.

Change the GPU to something like a Radeon HD 6870 or a 6950 and over-clock your CPU to at least 3.6GHz and your CPU Northbridge to at least 2.4GHz.

well you can try to unlock the 2 cores on your cpu. (dont know about mobo can do it) but if u r encodeing alot a cpu will help alot. athon 2 640 was 99.99 @ microcenter its a am3+ 3ghz 4 core. the 5770 is a ok lower end gaming card. a gpu would help in gameing but not encoding. I love my 580 gpu but thats more then your system (not to bash it). but ya new cpus are comeing and prices are going to drop, but if i where you i would get ddr3 mobo and cpu and mobo. make sure its a am3+ so bulldozer will fit it (no one knows if its 100% compatible but consistences are it will).

Good aftermarket cooling, and right at your price point. 6850s OC like mad....

Based on what you've told us, your current CPU is more than enough for your needs.

EDIT: His CPU is a quad core, not a dual...

I think the GTX460 was made as a competitor with the 5770. So really I think that would be a sidegrade rather than an upgrade lol although you might see a slight increase I dont think it would be worth it.

If you move your budget to ~$200 you could opt for a 6870

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...on%20HD%206870

if not you could grab a 5850 for around $170 no problem, which may acutally be the better option

Good Luck!
