Can i use Thermal Paste instead of pads?

Today i created a thread earlier and instead of using thermal pads i used thermal paste(Arctic Silver 5). Was that a good idea? the old pads were browned and hard so i took them off and cleaned the whole gpu and used thermal paste. I cannot test run it because i dont have a power supply i can use.(waiting for my new HX750). Im guessing the only difference from the pads and paste is that the pads are more solidified.

I would never use AS5 instead of a thermal pad on a GPU.
AS5 is highly conductive. D:

Sometimes a thermal pad is needed in order to make contact with the HSF, otherwise you'd be fine with a non-conductive paste.

A paste is too thin to help the RAM make contact with the heatsink.

Agreed. You'll just end up with a line of TIM dripping onto the bottom of your case or, god forbid, into your PSU.

Though the paste layer possibly being too thin argument is valid, the conductivity part isn't.
Since when is AS5 conductive? Isn't AS3 what you have in mind?

In that case, let's sue Arctic Silver Inc. for false advertising! smile.gif

Hmmm... Will have to perform a test some time to verify this issue myself. Got some leftover AS5 lying in my "Ye Olde Treasure Chest of PC Parts & Stuff" smile.gif

I use AS5 on vid cards all the time with no problem. It doesnt turn into a liquid and ooze all over the place.

Pads can be used as a spcer. The only way to tell if you can use thermal paste in its place is to dap some onevery component and install the heatsink and then take it back off to see if good contact is made. Id recommend going to radio shack and getting a tube of generic paste so you dont waste the good stuff.

Just dont goop it on. You can do AS5 on the gpu and ceramique on the mems to be safe.
