can I use a Cooler Master Hyper 101 to cool an AMD 890GX chipset???

Hi all,
I was just wondering if I could use a Cooler master Hyper 101 CPU cooler to cool my 890gx chipset because asus pc probe says that my chipset temp is at around 30 degrees which I think is hot because my cpu is at the same temp.

I take it you're talking about the South Bridge? The heatsinks on the MOSFETS and North Bridge look huge.

Back on topic, 30C is just fine. You definitely don't need to replace the heatsink.

That's not a problem,

Your chipset can get quite hot, if it was hitting 50 or 60 then I'd be more concerned. Also, the AMD chips run really cool anyway, my i7 runs at 72c on full load... biggrin.gif

the topic is not how hot my chipset is getting... it is if i can do this mod or not. and also does anyone have a picture of this chipset without its heat sinks because i searched google images and did not find a pic. and i have no clue where the south bridge and north bridge are so ill do a little text diagram thing. I think that the hyper 101 should go on the first one in between the exhaust fan and the cpu cooler and the 2nd one should just have the same heat sink except with the heatpipe cut short or something like that.

Uh, yea your diagram didn't help at all. Anyway, if you could find a way to get the screws lined up, then yea there shouldn't be a reason why it wouldn't work.

I think it'd look tacky, though.

nvmind that didnt turn out the way it should so i just took a pic off google images and the heatsink that i will replace with the hyper 101 is the one that says hybrid technology on it (the silver and blue one near the cpu)

I seriously doubt you can fit a HSF meant for a CPU on your MOSFETS. And if if you do, it wouldn't benefit temps at all. Plus, what would you do about your North Bridge?

Oh, looking at that picture, then no you probably couldn't. A CPU heatsink's base is huge compared to a MOSFET.

I dont know why I didn't think of that before, in all honesty.

He was putting it on his NB, though. The OP wants to put it on his MOSFETs.
