Help with overclocking?

Thread Starter
I want to overclock my Q9550, but I realized I don't exactly know how to. I know that there are specific guides out there, but I just wanted some little first help from the OCN members here. My specs for memory and motherboard are:

OCZ Platinum DDR2 Dual Channel @ 800mhz (PC6400) 4-4-4-18
Motherboard is UD3P, revision is 1.1 and bios is F9b

So, what would I need to do to get started?

this thread is huge but I found some absolute gold in it when it came to overclocking my c2d rig which is using the same mobo as you.

http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...ers-guide.html

Ther eis a newer bios available for your mobo which I think addresses some memory issues.

First thing is pretty big, you're gonna need some DDR2 1066 unless you can run that OCZ way over 800. You can lower your CPU multiple and do some testing.

Your board will be good for the FSB you need, but your RAM is likely gonna fail. You'll be pushing high 400s to 500 FSB to OC the 9550, and the lowest you'll get on your RAM is 1:1, which means at 4.0GHz, you'll be running 470FSB, which is going to be DDR2 940. Your RAM will need to be solid.

You can do a bunch of tweaking with a lowered CPU multiple, or you could make life easy and get 2x2GB of G-Skill 1066.

Ask me whatever you need, I have the same setup in my sig rig.....

I'm don't plan on exceeding 4ghz, 3.8ghz will be okay for me. My ram has been able to get to 910 on the timings right now, maybe higher with looser timings. I've done so far:

Disabled: Limit CPUID
Disabled: C1E
Disabled: C2/C2E
Diasbled: CPU Thermal Monitor
Robust Graphics: Auto
CPU Host Clock: Enabled
CIA2: Disabled

DRAM
Performance Enhance: Turbo
GMCH Latch: Auto
System Memory Multiplier: 2.00B
DRAM select: Auto

LLC: Diasbled
Dram Voltage: 2.1v

What should I be aware of when overclocking? Do I just have to raise the FSB slowly?

By "get to 910" do you mean it was Prime Blend stable, or you just got to a desktop and farted around?

Your board/CPU can hit 4.0 easily. You're going to have to spend alot of time screwing around with your RAM at a lower CPU multiple just to make sure the RAM is stable.

If that's OK then go for it, run Prime blend 4-5 hours to check your RAM stability.

Or go to Newegg, spend $80 and run your CPU up to 4.0 with your ram at 5-5-5-15:

What should I be aware of when overclocking? Do I just have to raise the FSB slowly?
i usually unlink the ram, so it stays on stock timings and speed, so it does not interfere with the cpu OC.
si in bios it will say ddr2-800 or 400mhz

this is a very basic explanation of overclocking

its basic maths. your Q9550 is rated at 1333mhz. you always divide this number by 4 so 1333/4= 333, this is your fsb.
then your processor (cpu) has a multiplier of 8.5
so 333 x 8.5 = 2830mhz or 2.8GHz

unlink your ram, so it stays at stock speeds, you can overclock the ram later

can you raise the fsb? yours is now 333. try rising it to 350
boot into windows
download realtemp and coretemp (google them)
install and run them
then download intel burn test (ibt) and run it.
have a look in task manager and notice how much free ram is listed.

in ibt set threads to 4 (for 4 cores) and then click on custom ram and enter an amount just below the free amount.
eg. i have 2520mb free ram. so i enter 2500 into the custom ram.
run the test for 5 passes. for now, and then at final speed you want, run for 50 passes
keep an eye on temps (do not let it go less than 20 (DISTANCE TO TJMAX) in real temp)

if test runs fine, go back into bios, and change frequency (fsb) to 375 and repeat the tests.
keep doing this in 20mhz steps until windows will not boot. then just go back a step (remove 20 from the fsb) to the last stable frequency, OR
just raise the cpu voltage a couple of levels. it should now boot.
its a balancing act, higher voltages will get you higher fsb, but it will also give you higher temps.

the trick is to do this step by step, and not go straight to eg. 470 (470 x 8.5= 4.0ghz), just take your time

get the cpu maxed before increasing the ram speed
