My First Sever Build....Would like some input

Over the past few years I have accumulated a lot of media and old hardware and decided that I would like to create a home server for my family needs.

The goal of the system is to be a media hub for the xbox and HTPC, ftp server, files server for weekly backups of the other systems in the house, and downloading various files off the interwebs.

So here is the hardware list that is being salvaged for this build, the only thing new are the F4 hard drives from Microcenter:

Asus P5K-E Newegg link
G.Skill 4GB (2x2G) DDR2 800 link
Corsair 450VX link
Intel Pentium E6500 link
Cooler Master Elite 335 link
5 Samsung Spinpoint F4 2TB link (microcenter has these on sell for 69.99 USD)
Western Digital 6400AAKKS (for OS, I have a bunch of these laying around) link
nVidia 8400GS link (this will be removed once the system is up and running)

I was planning on using Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard since I received a copy when I was in school, so I'm have the OS covered. I was planning on running Raid 5 for the drives with the ICH9R on board, which would leave me with 8 TB roughly and leave the thing running 24-7.

My question is will I run into any problems with using Windows Server 2008 R2 for the features that I am looking to do? Do you think that WS 2008 will have a problem seeing these Advance format drives? Also can you provide me with suggestions that you think I may have overlooked?

Thanks

I'd say Winsrv 2008R2 would be quite overkill for what you want, and will provide a lot of overhead.
If all you want to do is streaming and remote drives for backup, go for FreeNAS. It also supports several software RAID types out of the box, in addition to your motherboard raid options.

As far as RAID 5 goes: this might seriously kill performance, but you'd have to test that yourself. It all depends on the controller. If you have 4 drives, I'd go for RAID 10.

WHS is better suited I think. Also, big fan of the WD Green drives. They are cheaper as well. In addition, GPU is overkill as you stated. I would say go hunting on ebay for a super low wattage one if you can spare a few coins. If not, no biggie.

As far as the case goes, I would personally go with something that has no vents on the sides. Servers are meant to keep super quiet. The only fan viewable should be the back exhaust.

Have you ever seen/heard a server in real life? Here's why you shouldn't build a media center using a rackserver:

Wow? I guess if you were really hardcore you could put it in a closet with some sound proofing or something.

The sticker on the drives say to go to the website if you plan on using Windows XP or cloning software. I thought server 2008 was advance enough to handle these drives. I will have to do some research before I install.

I only have six slots on my MB. Correct me if I'm wrong but if I go Raid 10 I will only have access to 4TB as opposed to 8 TB with Raid 5.

If you want to move one of your drives you could do Raid 10, but raid 10 requires an even number of drives with a minimum of 4. If you did choose WHS then raid is useless with drive extender.

Its a firmware update to correct problems where they seem to kill the data after XX days uptime or something, im not sure 100% exactly ijust ran the firmware update as advised
