H70 VS Air Help

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

I'd just like to ask a few questions with regards to H70 vs Air Cooling I am aiming to achieve an overall more silent PC, the parts which I am worried about making noise are as follows:

Two in SLI on Sabertooth p67 TUF: 1280MB MSI GTX 570 Twin Frozr II/OC, 40nm, 4096MHz GDDR5, GPU 750MHz, Shader 1500MHz, 480 Cores

Corsair Obsidian Series 650D Case

850W Coolermaster Silent Pro M, Modular, 80 PLUS Bronze, 85% Eff', SLI/CrossFire, EPS 12V, 135mm Fan

Intel Core i7 2600K Unlocked, 1155, Sandy Bridge, Qd Core, 3.4 GHz, GPU 850Mhz, 8MB Cache, 95W, OEM with STOCK cooler.

The questions I wish to be answered are:
  1. Will the H70 be louder than an H50, or any equivellent air cooler?
  2. Air being the cheaper option, will it provide me with better performance with regards to noise than the H70?
  3. If anyone has any suggestions to add to the build, feel free!

Any input, as always is appreciated!

Thanks guys!

Will the H70 be louder than an H50, or any equivellent air cooler?

-All depends on what fans your using, air coolers don't make any sound on their own so it really comes down to the fans. The h70 and h50 make next to no noise with their pumps, again its the fans you use.

Air being the cheaper option, will it provide me with better performance with regards to noise than the H70?

The H70 is equal to many of the top air coolers out there, I have used the h70, and h50 and now the Noctua D14 (probably one of the best, if not the best air cooler). The Noctua costs 80CAD, the H70 costs 80-100. So really the price is pretty similar. However, the Noctua comes with all the fans you need, while the H70 only comes with one

The high end air coolers come with fairly quiet fans. I don't know how loud the radiator is let alone the Corsair fans, but I don't think anyone has really complained of the noise they made either.

If you want it quiet, go for air. The D14, Silver Arrow, and Archon's fans are superbly quiet. And it's cheaper than buying even low RPM yate loons and a H70.

Switch out the Corsair fans for some ugly Noctua 120mm fans.
They're extremely silent and have amazing airflow.

If you want to go air cooling, I would get the Silver Arrow or the Noctua NH-D14 if you have room for it. Both cool better than the H70 and are less expensive.

You could buy some Accelero Coolers for your 570's if you're concerned that much about noise. Your PSU will stay pretty quiet.

The loudest part of my machine is my Caviar Black. =P

@ Jaguarbamf, I'm getting the twin frozr II's because they're apparently "quieter" than stock coolers, am I wrong in assuming this?

Also, the Noctua D14 it is then, it is significantly cheaper!

@ Yoshi245 thanks for the input, it's confirmed the noctua D14

@ Rakhasa, I understand it is the fans, I'm talking about stock fans that come with the coolers here, sorry I forgot to mention that. I've looked at noise comparisons online, some say the noctua is louder, some say the H70 is as the pump buzzes?

The pump on occasion on my H50, buzzes, I just tap it, and the buzzing is gone, maybe it's to do with my mounting setup: fan>shroud>rad>shroud>fan>case>grill. I do use anti-vibration grommets; although it sounds like a pump buzz, not a fan vibration buzz.

Thank you for your input, and it has also confirmed the D14 yet again. I was looking at the Sythe Mugen 2, but, evidently the D14 is quieter; I'm not going to link any of these findings as I assume you guys are the same as me, and google everything.

I just wanted first hand knowledge of people who have used these coolers, and found their noise levels to be adequate/inadequate.

I know first hand the TY-140's on the Silver Arrow and the Archon are really quiet. You can't hear it unless you're a about a foot away from it and it's blowing air directly to your ear, even so, it's a light humming sound. You won't hear it a few feet away if it's in a case.

Just found out the H70 is noisy with fans at max RPM, and it was also idling at 50c... I idle currently at 46 with my H50 on my 955BE.

Also found out the Noctua NH-D14 does not fit with my RAM, and I am not prepared to change the RAM in this build, as I know what it is capable of.

Can anyone suggest a smaller CPU cooler? :/

How about this: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/therm...k-s775-am2-am3

The True Black 120, I'll stick some quiet fans on it, see how well it performs, maybe a gentle typhoon!
