Tri-Channel DDR3 on a Dual Channel DDR3 motherboard

Thread Starter
My friends PC is not working and I want to test every component before he sends it in. I have a motherboard with DDR3 RAM but there are only 4 slots. My friend has an i7 system and he has 6 total ports which three of them are equipped with ram sticks.

Is this possible?

Why not take them out?

Will run in interleaved. The first 2 DIMMs in dual channel will run dual channel and provide full bandwidth. Use more than that.... that's the end of your extra performance and it will run single channel. When you notice the extra slow downs, you'll know.
But otherwise, yeah, basically it'll work

I don't understand your question, I have taken them out, the PC turns on but no POST screen.

Wouldn't it better and more certain to remove his ram and use yours to test?
