DIY 4890 Fan Fix Opinions? (Pic Log)

Hey pros. I did a little fix-it on my GPU and was wanting you guys' take on it.

First, just in case: IF YOUR GPU IS UNDER WARRANTY, DON'T ATTEMPT THIS.

~~

Okay. So the fan on my 4890 junks out. Long story but it wasn't under warranty.

4890wdeadfan.jpg

I ordered a $2 80mm fan from the Egg to replace, so first thing is to remove the old one. It's just three screws, so no big deal.

4890wofan.jpg

The four screws on the back get the heatsink off. The thing was idling around 47C, but that was with the fan turned up to around 70%. It was loud and I wasn't real happy with it.

Turns out the thermal paste was solidified - came off in dusty hunks. Somehow I wasn't surprised.

I cleaned the thing off and was pleasantly surprised to find a mirror finish to the GPU itself. Quite lovely, if you ask me. smile.gif

So now that the heatsink is free, I needed the fan. The stock 80mm was in a beefy plastic rectangle that needed to be "adjusted".

modded80mm.jpg

To get the thing to seat right, I had to fiddle a little bit. The base of the old fan was just right to screw in and serve as a platform for the new one, so its raggedy jerry-rigged little self would be happy and properly oriented for spinup.

From there, I just hot-glued the new fan to the old base. Just like elementary school biggrin.gif

Now I just needed to put the heatsink back on the board. AND, I had some Arctic Silver 5 (angels sing) to put on the GPU before reassembly. I'd later find out this was a marvelous improvement over the stock...styrofoam-ish material.

And now the old fan vs the new fan:

Installed and back in the rig (yes I know the cable management could use work. TRUST me, you should have seen it before! I learned my lesson on full towers and short cords.)

And a view from the bottom, so you can actually see the fan as installed:

And my girl is back together now. smile.gif She's so beautiful.

xaservi.jpg

And guess what? Now she's idling at 41C. And the best part?

Silent. biggrin.gif Hah, I think anyone who's ever heard a stock 4890 at full blast can contend to how wonderful that is.

resultss.jpg

It does 61C under full load, almost 10C lower than before.

~~~
Honestly, I thought that was a pretty successful little escapade. Thoughts guys? Constructive criticism? smile.gif
It does when you register your product within 30 days of purchase - otherwise you're left with the 'normal' warranty, which isn't in effect almost two years after purchase tongue.gif
